I received this note from TAN, which sent me a PDF of the new book from Paul Thigpen:
Manual for Spiritual Warfare by Paul Thigpen, PhD, new from TAN Books. I have also sent a hard copy in the mail, so that you can fully experience the beauty of this book. Its striking ultrasoft cover is both attractive and functional, making it a perfect tool for prayer.
In a time where the Enemy is at work all around us, and yet so often unrecognized—or even, at times, embraced—by the culture at large, Spiritual Combat has perhaps never been so important. Here, Paul Thigpen helps us to see the work of Satan, bolster ourselves against him, and use the many tools we have been given—prayer, Christ, and the example of his saints, to name a few—to fight the Enemy.
Not a terribly interesting cover, but here is a screen shot of the table of contents.
We [TAN Books] have also just released Memoirs of a Happy Failure by Alice von Hildebrand, chronicling her thrilling escape from Nazi Europe through her teaching career at an institution hostile to truth and the faith. It is a compelling and ultimately uplifting glimpse at one of the most extraordinary and important Catholic lives of the past century.
Is this related at all to the classic book, Spiritual Warfare?
I really shouldn’t buy anymore spiritual books since I already sold off the majority of what I had.
Father, I have just purchased it through the hotlinked picture to Amazon.com. I had to manually change the URL, however, to get it to Amazon.ca, which seemed to work and I pre-ordered it (no stock here yet I guess). It was cheaper than Tan (which added a ton of shipping charges).
It would be helpful if you could also provide an Amazon.ca link on your site; I have no objection whatsoever to having Amazon ‘tip-out’ to you whenever I make purchases.
May the good God bless and protect you Father
Paul Thigpen is good people.
Yes. Excellent topic that is far too little discussed and unheeded. Here is one of my websites that also helps you to ‘Know Your Enemy’, also a book from TAN which I converted to a website including my own illustrations. Thank you TAN for giving me permission to put this content online.

“It’s [Evil’s] desire is for you.” –Genesis 4:7
Mostly, evil is content with indifference. But not always. There is an excellent new movie out (I think now on DVD), “Deliver us from Evil”. It’s pretty good at differentiating between ordinary evil that we face in daily life from real manifest (e.g. demonic) evil. I have a very holy friend (who takes our local Christian Brothers hiking, along with some priests), who tells me, “Chris, there are some days when I just feel like everything is aligned against me.” We all feel that way. But he’s also friends with a “Hospital Chaplain”, who’s really an Exorcist, and he has seen domonically possessed people levitating. “Hostage to the Devil” is a good book on-topic. It’s good to know that real evil exists so that we can fight it, and the best method is prayer, and spiritual exercises and advise as is contained in this book (which looks great, and I plan to purchase it.) Thanks, Father.
Looks good…maybe I can get someone to get me one for Christmas.
Here is another great site with many, many talks from Fr. Chad Ripperger.

“Is this related at all to the classic book, Spiritual Warfare?”
There are a couple of books by that name. Do you happen to remember the author? There is a classic book, Spiritual Combat, by Fr. Dom Lorenzo Scupoli which is free to download, on-line. It is from 1589 and was a favorite of St. Francis de Sales. There is also a good chapter on spiritual warfare (chapter seven) in the classic, I Want a to See God, by Fr. Marie-Eugene, OCD. Paul Thigpen is a modern catholic historian and a solid writer.
