Today we hear an outstanding offering of William Kilpatrick who writes at Crisis. He has had a look at the Instrumentum Laboris for the upcoming Synod of Bishops in Rome in October about the Amazon.
He has nailed it. A German Cardinal (Germans figure big in this, btw), Card. Brandmüller, examined the Instrumentum and blasted it to smitherines. Kilpatrick takes up where he left off and stomped on the bits and pieces remaining, with great humor.
Really. Just dig in and enjoy. It’s fun, but sobering. There are really strange things going on and we will have a lot to deal with.

Alas the weeds of Liberation Theology and Creation Spirituality sprout anew.
I imagine Evangelical Christians in South America are laughing their asses off at how easy it will be to use documents from the Pan-Amazonian synod to convince Catholics that Catholic beliefs and practices are pagan, after all…
Kilpatrick’s commentary is spot on. I’ve read most of the Instrumentum laboris. It’s really tiresome reading; the document is nearly unintelligible. I don’t think that it’s incidental that these horrible documents are so long. They probably know that there are very few people willing to read through the interminable, blathering nonsense. It reads like something Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote after reading Teilhard de Chardin and guzzling some ayahuasca. Truly abysmal.
Brilliant article, many thanks for the link Fr. Z. I’m a bit puzzled why the Germans want to listen to the Amazon people, but when the African bishops spoke up for African/Catholic values at the Synod on the family, they were denounced as reactionaries by the Germans.
To put the cincher on the actualization of the cosmic Christ, we do need to {SPOILER ALERT!!!}
sell the Vatican … whereby some good Samaritan[s] will eat the cost, splurging organic sludge to biodegrade the no doubt passe edifice(s) into the Italian forest. [Much to my chagrin I couldn’t find the Father David Telemond clip about the cosmic Christ … i.e., much to my chagrin I couldn’t conjure up Chardin! ;-)]
Hello Father! I was wondering if you ever considered uploading your podcasts to other platforms, like spotify or soundcloud?
