Jesuit Thomas Reese says “Vote for Biden”. So what if Biden promotes abortion and sodomy?

From Breitbart:

Jesuit Priest Thomas Reese Stumps for ‘Catholics for Biden’

Prominent Jesuit Father Thomas Reese has taken to Twitter to promote the national kick-off of Catholics for Biden, a “grassroots” group promoting the Democrat ticket in November.

The virtual launch of Catholics for Biden will take place Friday, September 4 and will feature prominent progressive Catholics such as Senator Dick Durbin, Sister Simone Campbell, Dr. Stephen Schneck, Dr. Polly Baca, Felice Gorordo, Tim Shriver Jr., Ana Sofia Pelaez, Peter Kellner, and others.

The event aims to help participants “engage Catholic voters” and whip up enthusiasm for the Biden-Harris ticket.

Last Thursday, Father Reese published an essay insisting that it is acceptable for Catholics to vote for Catholic candidates who openly support abortion on demand[B as in B. S as in S.]

The former editor-in-chief of America magazine declared that “a Catholic Democrat can vote for Biden, even if his policies promote abortions and gay marriage, as long as the voter’s intent is not to support those positions.”

“A Catholic Democrat might feel impelled to vote for Biden despite his position on abortion and gay marriage because of other morally grave reasons, for example, his positions on racism, immigration, global warming and COVID-19,” Reese argued.

Father Reese confessed that “most Catholic Democrats agree with Biden that abortion should be legal” anyway, which removes any moral obstacle for supporting him. [?!?!?]

In their teaching document on the political responsibility of Catholics called Faithful Citizenship, the U.S. bishops underscore the gravity of abortion, which they describe as the “preeminent” issue for Catholic voters.

The “launch” is actually tonight at 7:00 p.m. EDT, not tomorrow. Wouldn’t want anyone to miss it.

  2. teomatteo says:

Has Fr Reese ever stated what he is against in the Republican platform? That is important in my mind.

  3. Simon_GNR says:

Is Fr. Reese effectively saying “Whatever a Catholic believes to be right, is right”? That’s not Catholicism. Why is he still a Catholic priest if what he believes is contrary to Catholic doctrine?

  4. Barnacle says:

At least you Americans have some sort of choice in the matter. We Brits have had no leader who is anywhere close to pro-life. There are a few politicians who are pro-life, but you can only vote for the politician who represents your area. Mine is a CINO – he has consistently voted for all anti-life positions. He had his wrist slapped by the courageous Bishop Philip Egan, who said people like him should not present themselves for Holy Communion, and I note I haven’t seen him recently at Holy Mass, but he hasn’t changed his views. As Trump would say, “Sad.”

I am happy to know that I am only morally obligated to do something if I believe it is right and true. That really takes the pressure off. Here I was tricked into thinking that God was the creator of the moral order, but now that I know that, in fact, I am the creator of the moral order I don’t have to be burdened with pesky things like sin and rules or have to degrade my self by confessing to someone else’s idea of right and wrong. Thank Me.

    Two things:

First, as a member of the Knights of Columbus, I am aware that Kamala Harris (and Hirono from Hawaii) referred to the Knights as a hate group. I hope Catholic men remember that on November 3.

Second, I hope and pray that Democrats between 60 and 100 (who recall the old Democratic party and if you live in the South the blue dog Democrats) realize that the Democratic party of 2020 is not the same party that elected Jimmy Carter in 1976 (or even Bill Clinton in 1992). I hope those in this demographic, regardless of religious beliefs, remember this on November 3.

    quote:
“A Catholic Democrat might feel impelled to vote for Biden despite his position on abortion and gay marriage because of other morally grave reasons, for example, his positions on racism, immigration, global warming and COVID-19,” Reese argued.

    Translated into reality:

“A poorly catechized person who imagines he is Catholic might feel impelled to vote for Biden despite his promotion of grave sins prominently condemned by the Catechism of the Catholic Church as among the four sins that cry out to heaven for vengeance, because of other morally grave reasons that have nothing whatsover to do with the Catholic Faith,” Reese argued.

Catholics, you too can vote for Hitler! He’s building beautiful autobahns! He’s a vegetarian! And he loves his pet German Shepherd Blondi!

  10. tho says:

This guy is a certified idiot, I know that I shouldn’t call people names, but clergyman who spit in the face of centuries of Catholic teaching, and who are aided and abetted by like minded nincompoops should be described as they really are. We can see the harm they are causing, because in every Democratically controlled city and state we see their fruits.

  11. IaninEngland says:

So, you can support these wicked propositions by voting for Mr Biden as long as your intent is not to support those positions. Now, that’s the sort of contradiction and sophistry for which the Jesuits are justly renowned!
Only a Marxist would be stupid enough to fall for this.

  12. JustaSinner says:

Can a moral man follow the lead of an immoral man and expect redemption?
Can an imperfect man of flaws lead to righteousness without God’s intervention? Asking for a friend…

  13. I wonder what Jesuit Thomas Reese would say to:
“I am voting for the candidate that supports racism, but not because I support racism, but
       because that candidate is superior”
    -or-
“Since we are all racists anyway, it does not matter if I vote for the racist candidate anyway”

I have a hunch he would differ.

Words carry ideas and ideas have consequences. If you can use the same principles to derive a contrary result, you might want to step back and think things through again. That was originally part of the Jesuit tradition which is missing in many of them these days.

  14. NOCatholic says:

“most Catholic Democrats agree with Biden that abortion should be legal”

Sadly, on that one statement, Fr Resse might be right. Pro-life Democrats have been almost completely marginalized in recent years. With Dan Lipinski set to leave Congress after his Illinois primary loss, the highest ranking pro-life Democrat currently is John Bel Edwards, governor of Louisiana.

How I wish that Edwards or another pro-life Democrat had run for the Presidential nomination! While he probably would not have won, that would have sparked a debate that is badly needed within the Democratic Party and maybe brought them back from their current extreme position of abortion on demand anytime during pregnancy. We badly need viable pro-life movements within both major parties, not just the Republicans. Otherwise that paramount issue becomes overly partisan, exactly as it is today.

  15. SKAY says:

    No Catholic

I do not know if you live in Louisiana but I do. John Bel took plenty of pro abortion money
from other states when he ran for his second term. (Virginia Governor fund raiser) During the virus shut down he made sure
the abortion clinics were left open while other medical facilities were closed. Many Texans visited the
clinics–so nice of him to provide that abortion service to another state.
John Bel says a lot of things but skirts around the truth. His administration has been
caught double and triple counting covid 10 “cases” so things can stay shut down –our state
was losing jobs because of his policies even before the first virus shutdown.
As I said–John Bel says a lot. If you want the Democrats to have an “honest debate” I suggest you
find another person. I am not saying that he is not personally pro life but he is like the
other –“I am personally against abortion” politicians( If you believe that) BUT I will vote to keep abortion and PP available to continue taking the life of the innocent. Oh yes –I will certainly take
appreciate pro abortion money and remember that donation.

Maybe they think: Yeah, but it’s a dry heat.

  17. Bev says:

We need a bishop with the guts to *liberally* issue excommunications. Joe Biden first, Reese perhaps third, after the effeminate James Martin.

  18. Kathleen10 says:

So we are running the church by mob rule. As long as a large enough numbers of Catholic laity support something, that’s good enough. Gee why do we need the church at all? We can just take a poll and see if our fellow Catholics support something. If they do, it’s morally good, according to Fr. Reese. This type of person is exactly why the church is in such sharp decline and why the world is such a terrible mess. This type of craziness is the exact cause. We would not be where we are if the men of our own church had stuck to true Catholicism. They are directly responsible and will be held accountable. I don’t envy them.

  19. KateD says:

    robtbrown, AveMaria-
    It ain’t the heat, it’s the humility….

  20. Clinton R. says:

Catholic Democrat. Now there’s a classic oxymoron. Fr. Reese trying to justify voting for Biden is reminiscent of the serpent seducing Adam and Eve to eat of the forbidden fruit. Progressive Catholics? Meaning those who lost their faith decades ago, if they ever had any.

  21. Padre Pio Devotee says:

An increase of prayers for the Holy Father, bishops, priests, and religious, especially those who abandon Church teaching.

Saint Joesph Terror of Demons, Protector of Holy Mother the Church, and Patron Against Communism, pray for us!

Now this is a Catholic Priest, not afraid and telling the truth. Please watch
Fr. James Altman: You cannot be Catholic & a Democrat. Period.
    https://youtu.be/3-7eoTN2vNM
He absolutely puts chills up your spine, and with style yet to boot, Priests could take lessons, be not afraid
makes fr reese look really bad almost satanic

  23. The Egyptian says:

found out he is somewhat near you Fr Z, Saint James the Less parish – La Crosse, WI. There are people commenting that he sounds like the next Fulton Sheen.

  24. Fulco One Eye says:

If there is no clear and very public response by any of the bishops to Reese, Martin and even the latest drivel from Cupich, that will mark the end of them as moral guides to anything. It will only compound their dereliction during this virus hysteria.

BTW, the video by Fr. Altman is excellent.

  25. RosaryRose says:

Where are the Bishops?! Dolan is not any help, he is sadly handing these priests swords that are being shoved into the Immaculate Heart of Our Sorrowful Mother. This is evil.

    Cardinal Burke!! Stop them!!

Imagine handing a young mother her baby, dismembered and dead. That’s what these leaders are doing to Our Blessed Mother. Rather than roses at her feet, they are filling her lap with the dead bodies of tiny unborn souls.

It better stop or there will be hell to pay.

  26. RosaryRose says:

    Heretics for Biden

  27. Antonin says:

    Re:

Fr. Altman – he has no authority to say which party a Catholic may or may not belong to, if he doesn’t want to be part of Dems then don’t – this is a matter of personal conscience

    And besides …

    Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur”

  28. Stephen Morgan says:

“…as long as the voter’s intent is not to support those positions.”

Fr Reese (like his pestilential brother Fr Martin on Twitter yesterday) hereby provides cover for supporting and voting for – oh, I don’t know – a party who ended the oppressive servitude imposed by the landlords but starved 60 million in a bid for industrialisation; a man who guaranteed full employment and a stable currency but who also planned to make Jews non-persons; a man who poured castor-oil down the throats of his opponents until they suffered serious internal injury but made the trains run on time; transporting dissidents to the Gulag but …. do I need to go on?

  29. Semper Gumby says:

Hugh: Good point. There are a few faithful Jesuits these days, but for most SJ simply means Sozialismus Ja.

  30. aam says:

This is revolting. Where are the bishops? Do they have no authority over the Jesuits?

  31. robtbrown says:

    Antonin says:

Fr. Altman – he has no authority to say which party a Catholic may or may not belong to, if he doesn’t want to be part of Dems then don’t – this is a matter of personal conscience

It is also a matter of Fr Altman’s personal conscience to say which party a Catholic may or may not belong. Why do you extend the right according to personal conscience to one but not the other?

  32. OldProfK says:

“Father Reese confessed that “most Catholic Democrats agree with Biden that abortion should be legal” anyway, which removes any moral obstacle for supporting him.”

Do I hear an echo of fellow SJ James Martin’s “not received” in there?
