UPDATED: My View For Awhile: Rome-ward – CANCELLED and REBOOKED

  • I’m at JFK waiting for the redeye to Rome.

The food in the club was remarkably good. Too bad they are gutting the FF program.

Prayers downloaded. Gotta catch up.

The lines for the flight to Sao Paolo were stretched both ways along the walls. Crazy number of people.

….

….

Grrrr.

I’ve got horrible bars on the plane so I don’t know what will upload.

….

Pazienza. May as well get used to it right away.

How about now?

Sometimes rebooting gets you a fresh set of bars.

I should quit while I’m ahead.

Prayers for me, please.

UPDATE:

WELL… Something weird happened.

NO CAPTAIN.

So they are unloading everyone off the plane to wait in the concourse … in case he shows.   Then – IF!! – we will have to do this goat rodeo again.  How late will we be?

Who knows.

Lots of angry people here right now.

I think I can guess what you are thinking.

UPDATE:

It’s Sunday and I am still in Queen, NY.

After midnight they CANCELLED our flight. NO CAPTAIN.

They said that we could go to a customer service desk for rebooking, which caused an angry and worried stampede.

I had anticipated that we would be cancelled, so I had been trying to call the service line to rebook. About a zillion times: CALL FAILED. I didn’t get through and get stuck waiting. CALL FAILED.  This screen shot from about an hour after our scheduled departure.

So… I got on the app. There I found numerous rebooking options, mostly for multiple stops, loss of class (in more ways than one) and even bumped more days. I kept refreshing and found one NON-STOP flight for today, Sunday, which I pounced on. It was then that, of course, calls didn’t fail. Hence, I confirmed by phone what I did on the app.   He told me that I got the last seat on the flight.  I’m hoping to be upgraded.  HA!

They have our luggage which – God willing – will be loaded onto the proper plane when the time comes this evening.

I lost a Sunday in Rome, which makes me quite sad.

My heart goes out to all those people who were stuck there. I heard a lot of people saying: “Where are we supposed to go?” Imagine… stuck at JFK after midnight. I was fortunate enough to be able to make a call to a friend close the the airport. The incoming traffic was, however, a total nightmare and it was pandemonium outside. It took an hour for my friend to get there. So… I am so grateful that I had someplace to go and a friendly way to get there.

I get to do this again later today.

I will say a prayer for you before bed and upon waking. May Our Lady pray for you, and may St. Michael and your Guardian Angel fly with you.

  2. DvdH says:

It’s a pity that I’ve had to cancel my trip, so won’t get to meet you again. You’re in my daily prayers. Please pray for me. God bless you.

  3. Not says:

    Godspeed to you Father!
My Son travels for his business her in the USA. He encounters alot of the problems just like you. Also enjoys the FF’s like you, mangiare.

  4. AA Cunningham says:

Let us hope it is not a repeat of British Airways First Officer Mike Beaton.

Prayers for a safe journey, Father.

  5. acardnal says:

A friend in need is a friend indeed! A good friend you have who came to the airport in the middle of the night to get you.

  6. JMody says:

Father, just remember – once you can look at all the irritating things that you “have to do” as things which you actually “get to do”, life becomes much less stressful. Even JFK after dark …

  7. grateful says:

All in all, I’d say Our Blessed Mother definitely has you under her mantle.

  8. Cornelius says:

This is why I hate air travel. . . I just read an article that said that air travel causes people more stress than filing taxes or going to the dentist. I believe it.

  9. Ryguy says:

I’m sorry you had to go through this Father! I just went through the same thing at JFK Friday. Coming home from London and my connecting flight canceled along with many other flights. Had to scramble to find a flight the next day. Everything booked for at least 24 hours. Providentially there was an upgraded seat on a flight in the morning that I got booked on. The agent was perplexed how I possibly got booked on it. I can only attribute it to prayer. Then came finding a place to stay overnight. Everything was booked. I got the last room in a motel in a not so great part of town. All worked out but if I knew where it was I would have stayed at the airport. Glad you had a place to stay last night! Praying for your safe travels!

  10. Dominicanes says:

So sorry to hear you got stuck here in NY. The weather on Friday was terrible with widespread flooding.
We are not too far from JFK but not close, either, but if you are ever stuck and need a place to stay the Bronx might not seem so bad!

  11. Sue in soCal says:

I’m so sorry you had to go through this. Talk about a pilot shortage! I’m sure your sufferings will help compensate for the nonsense that will go on in the Synod on Synodality Synod.

This, along with my distaste for the TSA, is why I don’t fly anymore. And I won’t get vaccinated so cruises to other countries have been off the table. My current and long-standing rule for the last 20 years is, if I can’t drive there, I don’t go there.

I would love to see Rome again, but probably not in this life.

God bless you and keep you safe in your travels.
