Omnium gatherum

Three things caught my eye this morning.

First, posts are still arriving on Fr. Hunwicke’s blog, may he rest in peace.  He scheduled them (probably).  right now there are interesting notes about Rogation days.    HERE

New Oxford Review… for me is behind a paywall.  I would appreciate an assist, if you get my drift.  There is a piece entitled musing about Benedict XVI as the katechon: Was Pope Benedict XVI Holding Back the Destroying Flood? HERE

Last night I watched Catholic Unscripted (I pay attention to them) on YouTube. They brought up the fact that a Chicago priest did a full blown wedding for lesbians. The question is, will Rome or Cupich do anything about it? My guess is NO. But the people who want the TLM must be crushed into the gravel and kicked to the side of the road. It stands to reason. On the sham wedding HERE. BTW… the video to which I refer has a funny moment. Recommended with oak leaf cluster. HERE

I would like to collaborate with Catholic Unscripted. They have their heads screwed on in the right direction.

Thanks for pointing us to the very interesting article at NOR, Father. Among many interesting features is simply the turn that Dale Vree seems to have taken, from Popesplaining to criticism. To me the take away is that the separation of the two churches within the Church seems to be accelerating, and each of us needs to be sure which one he sides with.

As to the Katechon, another approach was set out by Ukrainian Catholic Fr. David Anderson in a video, available at Institute of Catholic Culture, I think, if memory serves. Fr. David says the katechon was the emperor of Rome, then its direct successor, the emperor of New Rome (Byzantium), then the direct successor of Byzantium (there is even a marriage in the line, as I recall), the emperor of Third Rome (Russia), murdered by the Reds in 1917. While Father David did not directly say so, my impression was that that means that we have been living in the end times since then.

Father Anderson’s discussion of the royal passion bearers is here:

Regarding the wedding, isn’t the priest in question excommunicated automatically for simulating a sacrament? What about the poor souls who think they are being shriven by someone excommunicated and therefore without the authority to forgive them their sins? It sounds like a damnable scandal of the highest order! The faithful are owed clarity.

    Dear Woody,

That is an interesting theory. Fr. Anderson was my chaplain at Wyoming Catholic College and served “in choir” at my wedding. He is a good friend and I highly regard his theological opinions.

However, you may be interested to read Dr. Alan Fimister’s amazing new book called “The Iron Sceptre of the Son of Man: Romanitas as a Note of the Church” (Os Justi Press, 2023). In it, he makes a convincing case that the character of romanitas (& the role of katechon which accompanies it) returned to Rome of the West at the near-simultaneous death of Byzantine Emperor Constantine VI (who was killed by his mother Irene and had no heir) and the coronation of Charlemagne. Hence, Western Rome regained its essential character and role as katechon, which became exclusive to popes when the most recent Holy Roman Emperor died.
