As I prepared mentally to leave the land of the platonic form of Chinese food for climes in which Chinese is hardly even a flicker on the wall of the back of the cave, we determined to go that way instead of Greek.
Spicy cucumbers.
Sichuan noodles.
Scallion pancakes.
Xiao long bao. Very good. However, the spoon was too small.
Eggplant with minced pork and ginger.
Crispy spicy beef. We asked them to ratchet the heat down a little for one of our august company. Truly crispy!
Chicken braised in Chinese “wine” and basil.
A good meal was had by all.
Now… packing for the last couple of flights to close the circle.

I grew up loving Chinese food, but gradually learned that this unique California cuisine bore little resemblance to what Chinese families ate across China.
Western Chinese food was chiefly introduced by railroad workers centered on San Francisco. Of course any ethnic cuisine needs to adapt to local supply chains and economic realities. Railroad laborers were really poor but resourceful. Drunken Irishmen didn’t get along with the others. Thankfully, a lasting peace can often be forged over the dinner table.
For a real adventure I sampled Chinese cuisine in Catalonia, which is thousands of miles removed from both California and Asia. They certainly achieved a unique cultural expression!
My son is married to a Chinese woman, whose parents invited us to visit. We spent 4 days in Foshan and surrounding area. Her parents were gracious hosts and her father and I quickly decided we were brothers from another mother. Our diet was heavy on rice and greens but we did eat cold spiced pork belly and what I later learned was fish belly soup. I now have a firm “no belly” policy.
I was thinking the way DCLex was in trying to solve the puzzle, I don’t have the solution, but Rg6 is not mate because K still has h8 to escape.
Anybody else, cus I ain’t got it.
