Daily Rome Shot 1048

I must raise money so I can attend the conference for priests held by the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology (Scott Hahn).  I’ve been to this conference in years past. They have been terrific, both for the content and the opportunity to be with priests.  I’m working on my travel now.   The theme of the conference this year is “Prophecy and Typology”.  Donate via PayPal HERE. If you want to use Zelle (no fees) drop me a note if you don’t have my email already. HERE

UPDATE: Thanks to

Chessbase has a story about a new chess table installed in the exercise yard of a prison in the Netherlands. Very cool. Elsewhere I’ve read about online tournaments between inmates in different places of incarceration. Very cool. Chess… everywhere.

White to move and mate in 2.

NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.

    A quiet move, 1. Qc8, leaves Black with no good moves. Whether he plays . . . c6c5, . . . c4c3, or . . . Kd4, White responds with
    2. Qd7##.

  2. JonPatrick says:

I think this will work but I don’t have a board to try it on so I could be missing something.

    1. Qa5+
King has only 2 moves d4 or e6
    If …Kd4, 2. Qe5#
    If …Ke6. 2. Qf5#

  3. A.S. Haley: 1. Qc8

I don’t think 1. Qc8 works for mate in 2 because 1…. c5, which gives the black King a scamper square on c4. After that it’s going to take a few more moves to corral that inky monarch, perhaps involving the transgendering of that g pawn and getting a new piece involved.

I think you have to go the other way with the queen. Hence,

    1. Qa4 c3 2. Qe4#

  4. JonPatrick says: 1. Qa5+

That will surely lead to mate, but not – I think – in 2.

    1. Qa5+ doesn’t force the black king to move. It allows for black to advance his retrograde c6 pawn 1… c5. After that it’s 2. Qxc5+ Ke6 3. Qf5# – so it’s mate in 3, not 2.

    1.Qa4 also doesn’t force the king to move. However, it puts the queen on that a4-e8 diagonal and a4-d1 diagonal. If 1… Kd4 2. Qd1# If 1… Ke6 2. Qxc6# If 1… c3 2. Qe4#. If 1… c5 2. Qd7#
