Why was Gregorian Chant suppressed even though the Council commanded that it be used?

Because the Devil hates Latin and Gregorian chant.

From the “Map Psalter” – England (1262-1300)

Those who suppressed Latin and Gregorian chant were doing the work of the Enemy.  They were willing or unwitting (maybe witless) agents.

Might I suggest during this synodal time of synodality throughout various dioceses around the world, bishops do what was asked of them by Rome multiple times and finally introduce Jubilate Deo?

Here’s a great little free booklet of Jubilate Deo containing the minimum of Gregorian Chant that Rome wanted the faithful to know after Vatican II. They issued this booklet to the bishops and cardinals in the 70s, 80s, and the 90s exhorting them to make copies and spread them around and make sure the faithful can sing them.

Why are hard questions never asked to people with authority who can answer them or fix the problems?

And that is why there is the Catholic Church and the Conciliar church; and they are not the same.

    And Our Lady foretold all.

And to make one more effort at our disposal to counter such works by the willing, unwitting, or maybe witless agents of the Enemy, there’s still time before December 12 to get in the last 9 days or more of the Nine-Month Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe (link on Father’s page above). We can also hope and pray that those good and faithful Hispanic immigrants from Catholic countries to our south bring with them a devotion to that Good Lady and to the Faith.

Here in Chile the music at the N.O. Mass is of the Barbie / Barney the purple dinosaur brand.

At the SSPX Masses….. the real deal…. it is professional level Chant music to say the least, and as a professional voice myself I can tell you it is the best I have ever heard.

I’m sure also a great many felt a great pressure to conform to the spirit of the age. Incredibly sad actually. There is a Church in our area, maybe 20 years old. It’s odd to think that Gregorian chant has probably never reverberated the walls of the building. Just the grand piano and the band. Gregorian chant is like a hallmark of Catholicism. Chant is used in movies, video games, various entertainment to get a point across or create a serious atmosphere, but not our liturgy. Non Catholics recognize chant as mystical and transcendent and many Catholics don’t even recognize it. Donald Trump was on the six feet under podcast with Mark Calaway, aka the Undertaker. They spoke of this theatrical entrance of the Undertaker and the president remarked about how amazing and ominous it was because he was there at the event. He spoke of the atmosphere and how it gave off this lasting impression. The entrance started with the “DaPacem” Introit sung by Benedictines. Fascinating it moved the president and millions of fans. Restore chant, send Satan back to hell.

Good point, Fr. Z: wittingly or not, they were doing the Devil’s work. But be that as it may, it would be worthwhile to know (when they were UNwitting tools of Satan) what they thought they were about in doing this, i.e. acting directly contrary to the explicit directives in Sacrosanctum Concilium. I imagine many or even most never bothered to read any portion of SC, so they didn’t know that it commanded the use of Gregorian chant, but surely some of the priests and religious did read SC and, at some point, had to think something like “but they didn’t really mean it”, or something that justified direct defiance?

Let me note: my wife has been on 5 or 6 choirs, most of which used more than a bit of Latin and Gregorian chant, and currently directs one. In almost all cases, the choir director has had a stiff, steady headwind against using or expanding the use of Latin and chant, either from the pastors, other choir members, or the people in the pews. As a result, it typically takes years and years, even decades, to increase the use of Latin and chant so that it has pride of place in the Mass. It CAN be done, because we have seen it done, but it is difficult and precarious (because a new pastor can easily destroy anything built so). But the fact that it takes many years or decades to rebuild what was destroyed quickly in ignorance and hatred of the good should make us vigilant with respect to all the other good practices in the Church that can be brought low by malice and stupidity.

Yesterday, the Veneration of the skull of St. Thomas Aquinas for his 750th jubilee at St. Dominic’s in DC, drew thousands. Twos lines out the main doors all afternoon — families, children and young urbanites.

Solemn Mass was celebrated by Cdl. “Tradition dies a bloody death” Gregory, but the program was almost entirely Gregorian chant. And standing in the long line to venerate the relic gives you time to quietly recite Panis Angelicus, Pange Lingua, Tantum Ergo, Lauda Sion and ask St. Thomas for his intercession in restoring the Traditional Latin Mass and Chant that he so ardently perfected.

One should note that Gregorian chant and its vernacular relations are enjoying a renaissance that is unprecedented. My friend at PAraclete Press, the American seller of chant books notes that they cannot keep chant books in stock. They fly off the shelves as quickly as they come in. The suppresion of chant has in many ways been broken and more parishes are singing chant. The bad old days of the spirit of VII are gone.

  11. ProfKwasniewski says:

Part of the problem was built into Vatican II’s way of stating that chant should have pride of place, as this essay explains:
