ROME 25/5– Day 34: Heat death of the universe

On this Feast of St Michele Garicoïts, the Sun rose at 05:49 and it will set at 20:25.

Pushed by the ever later sunset, the Ave Maria Bell, which you know know all about (more than you wanted to know) should ring for the Curia at 20:45.

I was sent a link to news that the heat death and total stillness of the known cosmos is now projected to happen in 1078 years rather than in 101100 years.   HERE   Entropy.

That would indeed someday be the fate of the cosmos if it were not for …

The Resurrection of the Lord put death to death.  Someday He will return, the cosmos will be unmade in fire, Christ will take to Himself all things and submit them to the Father and God will be all in all.

In the meantime, start making adjustments for that rapid speed up.

Speaking of resurrections, Major League Baseball has reinstated some players previous banned totally from organized ball including Pete Rose and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson.  HERE  Rose was banned for betting on games and Jackson for being part of the 1919 Chicago “Black Sox”.

BTW… I don’t believe I mentioned that I read the newest book by Michael D. O’Brien.

Letter to the Future: A Novel

It’s quite good and I recommend it. Long after the fall of modern Western civilization, the result of increasing totalitarianism and a supernatural illumination event, some children find a hiding place with things from before including a written manuscript recounting what happened. It is also not as long as some of O’Brien’s earlier efforts. Perhaps he has an editor now.

Black to move and mate in 4.

NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.

  1. James C says:

Shoeless Joe, the greatest White Sox hitter, finally gets mercy just days after a White Sox fan becomes Supreme Pontiff.

  2. Dad of Six says:

I think including Jackson and Rose is a mistake, but then I’m not a fan of the tremendous amount of sports betting as a whole, nor the payments of ‘student’ athletes. Too many possibilities for throwing a game to benefit a few with little chance of detection.

Once they are enshrined in the HOF with accompanying descriptions of their misdeeds, I expect Sosa and McGwire to be accepted as well.

  3. Gregg the Obscure says:

a website had a blurb “MLB lifts lifetime ban”. seems to me like death took care of that.

  4. UnwaffledAnglican says:

Question? Ia there any definitive Church teaching on whether the End of Days covers the whole universe or just our own cosmic locale? I know ir’s “new heavens and a new Earth,” but it seems like “new heavens” cou;d cover a lot pd scenarios.

  5. Lucas says:

I have *strong* thoughts about Rose(ignoring his off the field trouble, which IMO should not count against him) I don’t think he was ever sorry about betting on games. More that he was sorry he got caught and was punished.

Do I think he influenced games? Probably not

But I think he did bet on the them and I am in favor of the ban staying in place.

  6. Aliquis says:

I love Michael O’Brien’s books. I forced myself to read one chapter of this per night, to savor it longer. His storytelling has a wonderful way of creating shelters that you’d like to rest in. I was disappointed that this one was shorter, and I’m not sure if it was thanks (or no thanks) to an editor. Perhaps I’ll write my own continuation for my personal enjoyment.

  7. Greg Hlatky says:

If, after indulging in scandalous behavior, I were to go to Confession and neither acknowledge that I did much wrong nor express a firm purpose of amendment, I don’t think I could expect absolution. Manfred didn’t reinstate Rose in 2015 for pretty much those reasons. By lifting the ban, he didn’t say Rose was reformed, forgiven and readmitted to the good graces of MLB, he said Rose and the others were no longer in a position to harm the game.

As for the Hall of Fame, it may well be a long, long time before Pete Rose is admitted. None of the Steroid Era guys – Bonds, Clemens, Sosa, McGwire, Palmiero – was permanently suspended like Rose, all were on the BBWAA ballot and none got in before their eligibility expired. A-Rod and Ramirez are still on the ballot and are currently becalmed in the 30% range, less than half the 75% they need. Electors take their responsibilities seriously.

  8. TheCavalierHatherly says:

“the heat death and total stillness of the known cosmos is now projected to happen in 10*78 years rather than in 10*1100 years.”

    My holiday plans, ruined!

  9. jhogan says:

Oh my! 10**78 years! I guess we need to drop our concerns with everything else and save the universe! :-) For myself, I will meet this event with grace and acceptance if I still happen to be around. :-)
As for the rehabilitation of Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe, I say it is about time!

  10. jaykay says:

    “My holiday plans, ruined!”

Not quite, perchance. Try the Restaurant at the end of the Universe?

The steaks from the self-slaughtering cow should be good. Not to mention the pan-galactic gargleblasters. Have one or two of them – then you won’t even notice the Apocalypsis. Or, if you do, you’ll think it’s all part of the show.

And don’t forget to bring your towel.

  11. Venerator Sti Lot says:

“That would indeed someday be the fate of the cosmos if it were not for …” made me think of a variant on St. Ezechiel 37:3 –

And he said to me: Son of man, dost thou think this entropic cosmos shall live? And I answered: O Lord God, thou knowest.

  12. Charivari Rob says:

Gregg: I think MLB had always officially called it “permanently ineligible”, not “lifetime ban”, which would head-off anyone trying to write him in on their own initiative after his death.

Greg: I’m not 100% sure, but I don’t believe he goes to the regular BBWAA ballot. The only mention I’ve seen so far is from someone associated with the Phillies or the Reds (possibly HoF Mike Schmidt?) who said Rose would appear on the appropriate era/veterans special ballot, and the next time that committee votes is 2027 or 2028.

  13. Jack007 says:

St Michele Garicoïts! He holds a special place in my family. My late father was a boarding student at their Buenos Aires school in the late 1920s and early 30s. Most of the priests at that time were Basque, like their founder and my father. An obscure saint, certainly in this part of the world.
