VIDEO: Corpus Christi in Tokyo

I want to give a shout to the wonderful traditional community in Tokyo.  For Corpus Christi they had a procession.   Their FIRST.  They have a short video about it.

I hope you will take a moment to watch it.

I was there a few years ago and said Mass for them. Such good people.

Beautiful! A country half way around the world that I have never visited and do not know the language. The TLM and our traditional rites are a solid foundation. Watching this video, the look, the sound, and the feel is no different than a traditional celebration in my home parish. I could have fully participated in this service without knowing one word of the native language. Is that what is meant by ONE, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church?

I remember as a little girl my dad explaining that no matter where you went in the world the Mass would be the same. As a child I found that to be safe and comforting.

Now that is only true if you can find & attend a certain kind of Mass. Otherwise, as a visitor you have to read a parish’s bulletin or website to gauge what kind of Mass you might get.

Thanks Father!! I’m retiring on 31 December 2025 and we will be moving to Tokyo sometime thereafter. I’ve been looking for a “less-liberal” church in Japan and they are just hard to find.

Kōenji Catholic Church is in Suginami Ward, and that is one of the locations we’ve been investigating for our future home.

Alas … judging from photos on their Facebook page, they tend to have “girl alter boys” and receive Holy Communion in the hand — I think this is endemic throughout Japan …. wondering if I should use a napkin.

Beautifully done video! I agree with @maternalView that, as a child, I liked the idea of the Mass being the same everywhere.
I can remember when they introduced the “new” Mass, my comment on the use of the vernacular was that, if I was ever visiting a church where I didn’t know the local language, the Mass might as well be in Latin. :-) One of the weaknesses in the argument for the use of the vernacular in my opinion.

St. Maximilian Kolbe did so much in Japan.

I also watched the procession that the SSPX’s Japanese chapel aired. (You don’t need to know a word of Japanese to see how much the Japanese-born priest there loves his Faith; just the way he says the names of Jesus and Mary shows so much.) If you think about it, the TLM was just The Mass when it was first evangelized, but then the Mass was missing for over 2 centuries, it’s barely allowed again, then VII happens and it’s gone. The Mass for which the “Kakure” Christians longed for ~250 years was so short-lived once it returned :(
