“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”

"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

I think one of the things that Pope Benedict XVI should be remembered for is the help that he gave to Medjugorje.
Back in the Eighties the then Bishop of Mostar. Pavao Zanic, was poised to deliver a negative verdict on the apparitions. Benedict, as Cardinal Ratzinger, took the responsibility out of his hands as this bishop’s investigation into the phenomenon was flawed and prejudiced.
Medjugorje has gone from strength to strength and is now one of the most visited apparition sites in the world. Indeed, following a Vatican Commission investigation, has attained, de facto, approval by the Church. In many ways thanks to Pope Benedict’s timely intervention.

I read at NCRegister this line “At the end of the simple and solemn requiem Mass, the first for a deceased pope not to have the Roman Canon since the sixth century”
Which makes me profoundly sad if true, given Pope Benedict devotion to the liturgy.
I’ve been travelling and I’m sorry for taking so long to express my condolences. I hope history will be kinder to Benedict XVI than the press has been. I think he was misunderstood as a hardliner or liturgical reactionary to Vatican II when he was really exploring how to integrate heritage into current praxis. It is thanks to you and your readers I grasped his nuance.
I had the opportunity to shake hands with him once, when he was still Cardinal Ratzinger. I remember a man who radiated kindnesss and who had a frequent and distinct chuckle. Hardly a rottweiler. I know you knew him much better and that he was a personal hero and mentor. I am sorry for your loss.

In the pictures of St. Peters: on one side of the square it appears that almost everyone is wearing an alb with a red stole. And (shockingly) it almost appears that most of the stoles are actually the same color of red – though its hard to tell. Are they ALL concelebrating priests? Is that the idea? Is that how the Vatican has taken to doing mass concelebrations? (mass masses)
As for rottweilers: the only one I have ever known was an absolutely sweet dog: his owner walked him around the whole townhouse neighborhood at least twice a day, and I think the dog viewed everyone who lived there as “his pack”, and he was extremely gentle with little kids pulling at his ears and such. I don’t know if anyone from outside ever made any threatening moves around him (who would?), but with us he was a lamb.
Does anyone have any information on what sort of vestment (?) it was that Pope Francis was wearing during the funeral Mass? I don’t think that I’ve ever seen anything quite like it and haven’t seen any commentary on it yet.

Kids used to ride one of our Rottweilers while parents freaked out in horror. There was some confusion about where a house party was and some random high schooler walked into our house looking for the party (we live in a safe area where no one locks their doors when they’re home). Our big scary Rottweiler guard dog ran up to him and started licking him and wanting pets and head rubs. That being said, she had a strong sense protection in her.
