Chinese film alert

WU JI teaserI am a great fan of Chinese film and follow it fairly closely.  Here is some interesting news for you.

Zhang Yimou, director ofTo Live and Hero and House of Flying Daggers, along with the wonderful The Road Home, has a new one in production called The City of Golden Armor with Gong Li and Chow Yun-Fat, silver screen titans both.  The last time we saw Gong Li was in 2046 by the nearly insane Wang Kar-wai (part of the Days of Being Wild, In the Mood for Love, 2046 weird but gorgeous trilogy)

Gong Li is going to be in a new film called Young Hannibal.  And I don’t mean the ancient Carthaginian general.  This is to deal with the young Hannibal Lecter of film fame and the brilliant novels of Thomas Harris!  She will be a very bad woman, I hear.  Look for it in July 2006.  I am not overly optimistic about this film, frankly.  They seem to be pulling flashback material from the novel Hannibal which didn’t easily fit the film of that name.

Chen Kaige’s film Wu Ji/Infinity, subtitled Legend of the knights of the wind or variously Master of the Crimson Armor in more prominently The Promise in English (go figure) will hit theaters in Europe (I hope) on 15 March.  The French site is good.   Chen Kaige gave us Farewell, My Concubine and more recently Together.

Jet Li’s last wu xia film is Fearless should be interesting if the trailers are representative.
