Sad news: Michael Dubruiel – RIP

I sadly pass along the news that Michael Dubruiel, a Catholic blogger and speaker, has died.

I hope you will, with me, pray for the repose of his soul.

I will say Mass tomorrow for his intention and for his wife, Catholic blogger Amy Welborn, and their children.

The combox at Amy’s place is closed.

Perhaps you would post your messages here and your prayers as a spiritual bouquet which we can send her.

Michael is one of the few authors I’ve ever really wanted to write a thank you note to (and regret now that I didn’t). His “How To Get the Most of the Eucharist” sits on my shelf with the classic works of spirituality that I turn to over and over; I was moved by many of his insights and have recommended the book to so many people. I grieve for Amy and his family and plan to offer my daily Masses for the next week for him. And I hope that they are consoled in some small way by knowing that he has been and will continue to be an instrument of grace for many.

    Dear Amy,
I was so very sorry to read about Michael, and will be praying for you and your family every day. I am at a loss as to what to say to comfort you but hope St. Francis’ prayer will help:

The everlasting God has in His wisdom foreseen from eternity the cross He now presents to you as a gift from His inmost heart. This cross He now sends you He has considered with His all-knowing eyes, understood with His divine mind, tested with His wise justice, warmed with loving arms, and weighed with His own hands to see that it be not one inch too large and not one ounce too heavy for you. He has blessed it with His holy name, anointed it with His grace, perfumed it with His consolation, taken one last glance at you and your courage, and then sent it to you from heaven, a special greeting from God to you, an alms of the all merciful love of God.
    St. Francis de Sales

God bless you and keep you,

  146. regina doman says:

    God bless you
    Regina

    Amy,
My deepest condolences to you, your family, and Michael’s family. Tonight at CatholicSingles.com, at our weekly recitation of the rosary, Michael’s soul and your needs will be one of our prayer intentions. God bless you and keep you in His tender mercy.

  148. Kathy says:

Amy, my rosary last night was for Michael, my rosary today for you, my rosary tomorrow for your children. My heart aches for you.

  149. Jeff Pinyan says:

    Amy,

I’m grateful to Michael for two of his books on the Mass (the How-To and the Pocket Guide) that have helped me in my research. I’ve prayed for him and for you and your children, and will continue to do so. May God and His angels welcome Michael, and may he pray for us and all who miss him.

    Benedicere
    Jeff

  150. Nancy (n.o.e.) says:

    Nancy

  151. Jim Morrell says:

I once asked Mike if he could provide me reference material that would help me understand what “a devout Catholic” means. Based upon my conversations
with Mike on various topics, I believe now that I was talking to “a devout Catholic”. May Mike rest peacefully in the loving arms of our Heavenly Father.
I pray that Amy and her children will find comfort in the same loving arms that now surround Mike.

    Jim

  152. Bob says:

    For Michael Dubruiel:

For Amy Welborn and her children:
May Our Lady wrap you in Her loving arms during these trying times, and may you have the consolation of knowing that you and your family are loved and admired by many readers you have never met.

  159. Bryan says:

    Amy:

It is said the prayers of even one person, if they had faith the size of a mustard seed, could move mountains.

That being the case, please be assured of the remembrance by my rosary group and the offering of this spirirtual bouquet by our weekly rosary group for Michael’s soul when we meet tomorrow evening, first to thank Him for the gift of his life to our Faith, and second, to petition Our Lord to look upon him with mercy, and you and your children with loving care.

The Catholic world has lost a clear voice of reason and intelligence that distinguished him from the all the rest. You certainly have lost someone dear to you, we have lost someone any of us would be proud to call a friend.

    God bless.

  160. Lynn says:

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord; may he rest in peace with the God he loved and served so well. Thank you for Michael’s life. We will never forget him.

  163. Emily Bell says:

I was lucky enough to win a signed copy of his _A Pocket Guide to the Mass_ last year. It was the perfect book for my nine year old when we did our yearly review of the mass. Short and simple enough for her to read, meaningful enough to hold her interest.

My prayers are with him and his family.

    Emily

  164. Fr. J says:

  165. katerine says:

May he rest in peace. My family’s prayers are with Amy and her children. I cannot imagine what she is going through right now. May God give her and the children strength and consolation.

Amy has requested that those who would like to help should buy Michael’s books because the proceeds go directly to their kids college fund. Lisa Hendey at Catholic Mom is helping with that request at http://new.catholicmom.com/2009/02/04/february-book-club/.

Michael Dubruiel’s great book on the Mass moving up the charts at Amazon. I don’t know where it was yesterday, but it’s taken a huge jump already today as we all work together to support the family.

Danielle Bean has also established a support fund to a donation fun to help their children at her site: http://daniellebean.com/2009/02/04/please-help-spread-the-word/

  166. Maureen says:

Right now, the How To Book of the Mass is the #1 Amazon book under Religion, and #253 for all of Amazon today.

I am very proud to be part of St. Blog’s Parish today.

  167. Maureen says:

    Correction for accuracy —

It’s #1 under the Religion subcategories Catholicism, Ritual, and Prayer. Under Religion, it’s #26. But still — this community is clearly putting your money where your mouths are.

  168. Karen Russell says:

I am so sorry. My children were also young when my husband died suddenly, so I know a little of what you must be going through.

May God grant Michael eternal rest, and for the rest of his family, strength, courage and faith.

  169. Garrett says:

Requiescat in pace! May the Lord welcome him into His Kingdom, and may he receive a good defense at the Judgment Seat of Christ.

  170. marie says:

Amy – Though a stranger to you, my heart breaks for you. My family will be praying for you, your children, and the repose of Michael’s soul. We will also offer God thanks for His servants, who have so generously taught us a great deal over the years through their work and witness. Thank you, and God bless you.

  171. May the Lord be with Amy and her family at this terrible time.

  173. John says:

A good man I had the pleasure of knowing years ago in the seminary. Gregarious, outgoing and very opinionated – he mellowed after ordination. But true to himself, he realized that his true vocation was not as an active priest, but as a layman leading himself and others to Christ and the Sacraments. Least anyone worry, Mike (and many others) was laicized and married in the Church (now is not the time to talk about the deplorable “formation” where we both attended). Mike loved life, his wife and children. But Mike knew his prioriteis and when our Lord called, I know he was surprised, but ready and not afraid. RIP my friend and may God continue to shed His choicest blessings on your family, friends and the Church.

  174. Gen X Revert says:

I am praying for Michael, Amy and their family.

  175. Trish says:

“May the angels escort thee to paradise, may the martyrs receive thee at thy coming and bring thee into the holy city Jerusalem. May the choir of angels receive thee, and with Lazarus, who once was poor, mayst thou have eternal rest.”

Eternal rest grant unto your faithful servant, Michael; and may your grace and consolation be upon his wife Amy and their children.

My deepest condolences Amy! My prayers are with you and your family.

  176. I am so sorry to hear of Michael’s sudden passing. I am praying for Amy and her children.

Michael’s book The How-To Book of the Mass was instrumental in helping my raised-with-no-religion husband understand what it was he was sitting through. I count his reading of it as one of the major steps that led him to enter the Church last Easter Vigil. Thank you, Michael, for your work here on earth. I hope that you will be a faithful intercessor in heaven. Until we meet, God bless you Amy and your family.

  177. Tara says:

I will have Father offer a Mass at our Parish, for the repose of his soul!

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace. Amen.

  180. I offer my daily Rosary for the repose of his soul.

    Jeff S.

  181. Ouiz says:

I have been thinking of Amy and her family all day long. I had the privilege of meeting both Amy and Michael in Atlanta last year, and they were both so gracious. May God grant Michael rest, and may He carry Amy and her children in such a comforting, tangible way as they grieve the loss of someone they love so dear.

  182. Dear Fr. Z.,

I am praying for the repose of Michael’s soul and for his wife Amy and their children. May God always protect them, lead them, comfort them and guide them. All for the Sacred and Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, all through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, all in union with St. Joseph. Amen

All my love in the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
    Joan Haselman

  184. Tony says:

    Dear Amy,

I never knew of you and your husband’s work until now…But you, your family, and your husband are in my prayers. Your pain must be terrible and the tears might have no limit. Losing a spouse…I tremble at the very thought of it – and so unexpectedly. This Lent, you and those like you who have lost their spouses (especially so early in life) will be remembered in my fasting and prayer. May Christ’s love keep you strong, no matter how much you are hurting. Do not give into despair! But do not fear sadness and sorrow…May our Blessed Mother, who knew pain well, protect you and your children and lead you to the Resurrection with Her Son. I grieve with you, and hope my pitiful prayers are of some help to you.

I will go to low mass tomorrow and ask my pastor to say mass for your husband, as well as you and your family.

    Sincerely in XT,
    Tony

  213. Mary Grant says:

I am so sorry to hear of Michael’s passing. I met him and Amy when she spoke at St. Anastasia’s parish in Troy, MI several years ago, and purchased several of their books. My favorite has been Praying the Rosary that they co-wrote. They were both so gentle and kind. On reading Amy’s note, I quickly purchased Michael’s book The How-to Book of the Mass, and will cherish it. I’ve offered a rosary for Michael and his family, and will continue to pray for the repose of his soul, and Christ’s comfort to Amy and their children. God bless you all.

  214. I have no personal contact with the Dubruiels, but I will keep Michael and the family in my prayers.

  215. Earl says:

When I played a minor part in St. Blog’s Parish some years ago, Michael was always generous in his kindness and encouragement, but his humility was matched by a lion’s courage in his defense of what is decent and true and his death, while heaven’s gain, is this world’s loss. My prayers and heart are with Amy and their family that God, whose faithful servant Michael surely was, will console them as He alone can. Rest in peace, my dear brother in Christ–a rest you have earned on the front lines.

  216. Joseph E. Fey says:
