A reminder
As I was listening to the news tonight, I tuned into hear Fox News White House correspondent Major Barrett in front of the White House.
As he spoke there was a Cardinal singing unmistakably, brazenly, unselfconsciously, in the background.
Matthew 6:
25 "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, [think about health care bills] what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
27 And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life?
[...]
33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.
34 "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day’s own trouble be sufficient for the day.
Yes, the things of this world are important. We must, in charity, try to discern the right thing to do for our neighbor and ourselves.
But think also – mostly – of your eternal reward.
This may be a first—Holy Scripture, with Father Z’s emphases and comments!

These things too, yes, even these things, are for the greater glory of God.
Comment by Luke — 17 March 2010 @ 6:30 pmYesterday I was thinking about all this healthcare turmoil on my way to Mass and despairing that anything could stop this evil legislation. As soon as I got into Church I thought of the gospel of Christ asleep in the boat (on a cushion!) while a storm is raging. The apostles are so terrified they wake Him up. And He says to them: “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?”
And suddenly I was calmed.
Comment by DisturbedMary — 17 March 2010 @ 6:53 pmBravo, DisturbedMary. I too have been trying to put myself away from these goings ons, as of late. It’s really disturbing to one’s peace. I have to keep telling myself that the more I get worked up about them, the less I am paying attention to my spiritual life. Gospels like the one from yesterday, are awesome for setting one’s heart back on the right track. I’ve done all I can do, it’s now up to God. And even if Obamacare passes, and even it somehow is signals the coming of the Apocalypse, than at least I know who the devil is so that I can avoid him at all cost.

A non-Biblical text I find comforting is from the Autobiography of St. Therese. She quotes these words of a poem that her father taught her: ‘Time is thy barque, and not thy home’. Or, to put it in a more ‘modern’ way: ‘The world’s thy ship, and not thy home’.
Thank God we don’t live forever on this earth-we have another country to aim for!
