Are you offended by the use of G-O-D?

From the amusing Eye Of The Tiber:

Atheists Sue To Remove Letters “G”, “O”, And “D” From Alphabet

Berkley, CA––The civil liberties organization American Atheists has sued the U.S. government to remove the letters “G,” “O,” and “D” from the English alphabet, arguing that the letters “often come together in such an order as to promote a belief in God,” its director, Edward Kegin, said Friday. “The letters represent a violation of rights to many atheists around the country, in that the letters are being misused to promote religion.”

Some now believe that the lawsuit may eventually be modified so as to also remove the letters “F,” “A,” “T,” “H,” “E,” and “R.” American Atheists’ President David Silverman said that the letters are an “offense and no less of an attack on the rights of man than was the inquisition.”

In a letter to members of American Atheists Friday, Silverman wrote, W- c-n n- l-n— s–n- by -n- w–c- -s -u- -i—s -n- ——ms — —mpl– -n by –li-i-us z–l–s. N- l-n—…n- m—!

OK, am having trouble with the last line. I got so far as:

“We can no longer stand by and watch as our -i–s and —-ms are trampled on by religious. No longer…no more!”

    This is driving me nuts!

  2. AnnAsher says:

Awesome. I say we let them have their changes to the alphabet after they consistently employ the new alphabet in all their communications for 30 years making it a lasting tradition!

  3. JohnnyZoom says:

“In the beginning was the Word: and the Word was with God: and the Word was God”

Forget letters! Using words promote a belief in God! No more words!

  4. asperges says:

I would not object to V,A,T, I, C,A, N and Roman numerals II used all together being banned.. but American spelling always has seemed rather odd to some of us!

  5. anilwang says:

No problem. If G-O-D is removed from the alphabet, Yahweh should be good enough.

Now if they also removed “F,” “A,” “T,” “H,” “E,” and “R”, we could use ???? (i.e. “theos” which is God in Greek letter), but A-T-H-I-S-M would be in a pickle since all that’s left of atheism is just the a generic I-S-M. Given that the PC crowd has been trying to get rid of all “isms” they’d be especially targeted while ???? followers would be left unscathed.

  6. anilwang says:

Chuckle. It seems that the Greek letters in my previous post got converted to question marks….not entirely inappropriate if you’ve done any study of Eastern Catholic or Orthodox theology.:-)

  7. wanda says:

Kat, Rights and freedoms, I think. Would that we were ‘free’ from having to endured this piffle and had a right to our belief in God.

  8. monmir says:

We need a waiting list for brain transplants! Quick. The question is always the same “who is intolerant of the other”.
How does my believing in God prevent an atheist to live his life??? Unless… deep inside he is really scared of the crucifix, scared of God and won’t admit it and just go to battle for the h— of it which will be his final destination.
One will spend Eternity with one’s friends, choose them well.

  9. Christopher says:

The sad thing is… I would not be terribly surprised if this were to happen.

    God Bless.

  10. TravelerWithChrist says:

then how will we spell d-o-g?? and so many other words. How will they spell g-a-y without the g? aayyyyy fonzerelli

  11. MarnieBarcelona says:

Is this a joke? I know it’s a joke (nonsense), but is it a joke (gotcha)?

  12. anilwang says:

@monmir says: “How does my believing in God prevent an atheist to live his life???”

Actually, I can answer that. Are you a “Sunday only Catholic” or are you a Catholic 24 hours a day and 7 days a week? If you’re the former, your comment is correct. If you’re the latter, it will affect how you vote, how you give charity, which services you provide or refuse to provide, which stores you will patronize, and even which mass media you will consume, boycott, or protest. It will also have an effect on judicial and administrative appointments that share your faith.

Atheists have a perfectly valid fear of theists. However, engaging in power plays to shut down opposition to their views, and preventing people from practising their faith even when it does not impact them in any way, is positively totalitarian, unethical, and immoral by any standards (secular or not). Unfortunately, postmodernists and those of Saul Alinsky ilk see nothing immoral in this since they see *everything* as a social construct created by power plays.

These postmodernists need our prays to get beyond such extreme cynicism and have the gift of faith in *anything*.

  13. wmeyer says:

then how will we spell d-o-g?? and so many other words. How will they spell g-a-y without the g?

Who cares, as long as the atheists (and lawyers) are happy?

  14. Laura98 says:

Well.. then we’ll certainly need to get rid of J-E-S-U-S.. can’t have that offensive word and letters, now can we? Then I suppose we’ll all have to kick in some $$$ for the legal name changes for all the people who happen to have ‘Jesus’ as a name, because having that for a name might offend someone too. Then, my goodness, what do we do with all the women named Mary or Maria? Because surely, we all know who that refers to! We’ll need to get rid of those letter too, if they aren’t gone already, and change everyone’s name who has that! Oooh what a free and wonderful time we shall enter.. free of all those horrible references to that old dying religion…. Oh Brave New World….

Nah… this lawsuit isn’t gonna happen. This is another stupid frivolous case. They might strip “God” from everyplace He’s listed… but they can’t take letters from the alphabet.

  15. This cannot be serious!

  16. Kat says:

@wanda That makes sense! I guess I need to do more practice on cryptoquips.

  17. Bea says:

    Have they gone completely mad?
    Never heard anything so ridiculous.
Like MarnieBarcelona says “Is this a joke?”
It must be. Who in their right mind would dream up such a thing?
But then Atheists are not in their right mind, are they?

  18. VexillaRegis says:

“then how will we spell d-o-g?” Who cares about dogs? As long as we can spell the word c-a-t, there is nothing to complain about ;-).” Cath’lic” would work instead of Catholic. Our dear host, OTH, would be rather affected by this reform: Fr. Jhn T Zuhlsrf, hmm, that’s five consectutive consonants…

However, as Catholics we don’t necessarily have any problems – we could just use one of our own languages, Greek. Ha!

  19. VexillaRegis says:

FYI: This is tagged under “IRONY” by Fr Z.

  20. majuscule says:

I’ve always wondered how many have become martyrs for their atheist beliefs…

  21. mamajen says:

“Eye of the Tiber” is a wonderful satire blog. Commit the name to memory (or better yet read it regularly) and you won’t be fooled next time Father Z posts one of these.

  22. Tantum Ergo says:

    The letters L-I-B-E-R-A-(2nd “L” is redundant) OFFEND ME! Oh, no… I just remembered… can’t do that after all… “L -I-B-E-R-A” nos a malo! (especially spittle-flecked-nutty throwing athiests!)

  23. Tantum Ergo says:

Now let’s not forget that the Muslims want to ban the “t” because it looks like a cross, and they got there first, too!

  24. The Masked Chicken says:

I say, outlaw all of the letters. There would be no texting, People would have to glare at their neighbor instead of swearing at them. Politicians would have to learn sign language. Oh, the possibilities. Silence, I say, blessed silence. Some people have never “heard” of the word.

    The Chicken

  25. Tantum Ergo says:

Who would have guessed that such words of wisdom could come from a Chicken?

  26. wmeyer says:

Chicken, I thought politicians already used sign language. At least, I am sure I saw them using it with me.

  27. Crucesignata says:

Hahahahaha! I am sorry, but this is one of the silliest things ever! XD *chuckles*

  28. Edprocoat says:

    Can I buy a vowel ?

    ed

  29. Mariana says:

    Personally, I find “V”, “E”, “R”, “S”, “U”, “S”, “P”, “O”, “P”, “U”, “L”, “U”, and “M” offensive!

  30. Mariana says:

“Who would have guessed that such words of wisdom could come from a Chicken?”

a MASKED Chicken! Surely a Ninja Chicken?!

  31. Suburbanbanshee says:

Heh! Actually, the alphabet is an icon of the Word, St. Ephrem says in his hymn against the heretics. And that’s part of tradition, which is why the Latin or Greek alphabets were traditionally chalked on the floor of new churches that were going to be dedicated. (Don’t know why anybody ever stopped that. It’s awesome.)
