Card. Burke’s sermon on marriage

His Eminence Raymond Card. Burke recently celebrated a Pontifical Mass at the faldstool in the Basilica of San Nicola in Carcere in Rome.   The Mass took place the day after the close of the conference of the Confraternity of Catholic Clergy and I was subdeacon for the Mass.

The text of His Eminence’s sermon for the occasion has been provided by NLM.  Check it out HERE.

The Cardinal is always spot on when he speaks about the unchangeable truths of our faith.

Cardinal Burke was a proponent of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass during his tenure as Archbishop of St. Louis. He often returns to St. Louis to celebrate the Extraordinary Form at St. Francis deSales Church. A parish in St. Louis County started celebrating the EF every Sunday at 10 am., as described in the following article from The St. Louis Review: http://stlouisreview.com/article/2015-01-21/mysterium-tremendum

    Brick by brick…….

Good take on some unusual points. One of the things the Pope forgot to mention in his confusing statements on large families is that it is not the number of children that determines poverty, but the marital state of the parents. The Church’s teaching on marriage (and its lack of insistence on it in connection with sex) has been so bad in the Philippines that most of these “teenage mothers of 4 before they’re twenty” (this was a woman who supposedly appealed to the Pope) are not married and probably never will marry. And nothing brings poverty like “single motherhood.”

The same is true in Latin America, where men once married and often, even if they rarely – er, slept – at home or even had a full-time mistress, supported their children and actually took pride in doing so as a matter of honor. But the modern Church sure kicked that old-fashioned notion out the door. (I bet you’d find this is true in a certain diocese in Argentina…)

Sixteen years ago, we had a POPE correct the error (that the Holy Couple was not Man and Wife at the time of the Annunciation) in an Apostolic Exhortation. It did nothing to stop the “Mary was an unwed mother” homilies.

If only the present pope saw the horror of this blasphemy; how it is destroying marriage in the Church and in the world. If he did, the anathemas would be flying from his Chair!

    mikeinmo,
Thanks so much for posting that link from the St. Louis Review! I was unaware of the advent of the EF Mass at St. Barnabas’. That is so much closer than any other offerings in this area; I may have the opportunity to attend! I would have been unaware without your link. Thanks so much!

I pray Cardinal Burke is chosen to be our next pope and soon. Words fail me when I try to describe how I felt when our pastor gave us the Mary was an unwed mother sermon. I shut down to the extent that I do not remember one other thing about his sermon! I have since quit going to mass at my home parish and was finally brave enough to write a letter about my concerns to the bishop. I know he was summoned to the office of the bishop but I have no idea what transpired. There is no way to reprimand a priest into holy behavior so he needs our prayers. I read today that Bergolio pretended to be conservative due to pressure from the Vatican. That worked, not!
