Contrary to tweets – the Extraordinary Form Mass in honor of Nellie Gray IS GOING AHEAD!
There was word put out that it was cancelled. NO! Even the parish website (as I write) indicates that Mass was cancelled. NO! IT IS BACK ON, but as a Solemn Mass, not Pontifical.
So… A Solemn Mass (with deacon, subdeacon) will be celebrated today at 3 PM EST at Old St. Mary’s (St. Mary Mother of God) on 5th. MAP HERE
As a bonus the wonderful choir from Holy Innocents in Manhattan will sing for the Mass.
Also, after that Solemn Mass, there will be another Mass, a Low Mass.

The Pontifical High Mass at 4PM is cancelled.
There will be a Solemn High Mass at 3PM.
I couldn’t go to either as I’m 50 miles away with a pregnant wife and the snow plus the wife wasn’t a good combination.

Is it a Requiem?? I didn’t think it was acceptable in the EF to say Mass “in honor” of a non-canonized defuncta.
I mean no disrespect here but can anyone explain to us the logic of having a March For Life during the coldest part of the year? May God grant that they were throughout the year. That said, if we’re only going to have one, why during the coldest part of the year?
Spock, the March for Life takes place on January 22 because it was on January 22, 1973, that abortion became legal with the Roe vs. Wade decision.
WmHesch: the Missa Solemnis was the red vestment Mass of the day, of Saints Vincent and Anastasius. The Mass intention was for the repose of the soul of Miss Nellie Gray, foundress of the March for Life (and loyal TLM communicant at Saint Mary’s in D.C.)
The Holy Innocents choir (invited by the Paulus Institute, which sponsored the Mass) did a terrific job with the polyphonic ordinary (Hassler’s Missa Secunda) and motets, as well as the propers in Gregorian chant. Two bus-loads of Holy Innocents parishioners filled the church in the midst of a very heavy snowfall that began the D.C. blizzard.
A beautiful High Mass today that, as (celebrant) Father Pendergraft, FSSP, remarked made it feel like we were at Our Lady of the Snows.
Thanks for the heads up, all! Mass was wonderful despite the smaller clergy/server team, the propers were an awesome providential fit for why we were in town, and Fr. Pendergraft had a great comment about Our Lady of the Snows- the snow is a marker of where God wants us to be.
Related, but there’s pics going around of Marchers who got stuck on the PA Turnpike due to the snow and accidents. So they built an altar out of snow and a Priest said Mass.

Walk for Life? March for Life? I’ve just driven back from San Francisco, where we had a Solemn High Mass after…. apparently nothing happened previous to it. NPR, FOX, CNN — not a breath about the 60,000 people who walked peacefully down Market street. I don’t even think traffic radio mentioned that there might be difficulty in San Francisco……
Didn’t Pope Pius X say something about surrounding the faithful with a blanket of silence?
I don’t know about national coverage, but as for local outlets, there were video reports of the SF March for Life on channels 2 and 4 this evening, as well as on the Chronicle’s website.
