Pres. Trump and Cuba’s “Damas de Blanco”

Yesterday I watched Pres. Trump’s speech in Miami regarding Cuba.

One thing that struck me is that he talked about the “Ladies in White”.

I don’t recall… did Pres. Obama ever talk about them?

  1. Boniface says:

Let’s pray that the Lord Jesus may pour out his grace and conquer all superstition and occult activity. St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle… !

  2. Stephanus83 says:

There is nothing occult about the ladies in white. They are wives or relatives of inprisoned dissidents. The ladies in white attend mass on Sunday dressed in white as a protest to draw attention to the unjustly inprisoned. They are frequently harassed or arrested themselves by the Cuban government.

  3. Boniface says:

I was talking about the voodoo practitioners you see in Havana who dress in all in white and loiter around town, including outside some Catholic shrines there. My mistake, I suppose.

  4. SKAY says:

Mr. Obama was much more interested in cozying up to the Castro brothers.

From the article that Makemeaspark linked to about the women in white:

“I think when the people realize that (money) is just going to the government, that’s when there’s going to be a problem. … The people will realize that Obama came, and … there’s still nothing.”

  5. Ed the Roman says:

I beleive that the Obama administration ignored them as thoroughly as it did the menace of resurgent Melniboné.

President Trump’s speech about Cuba revealed once again, that this is a great man, Americans are blessed to have him. It is a tragedy that just when we have a president willing to make positive changes, too many Americans seem to have lost their minds. He touches our hearts with his references to God and prayer, and there can’t be any doubt he cares deeply about doing the right thing for America, and for the Cuban people as well, who have suffered so much under Communism. He goes out of his way to show interest and compassion toward others, as he did with Congressman Scalise and the others wounded by the crazed Democrat. He names people, and acknowledges them, in a most affirming way.
I maintain that President Trump is the president we need at this time, and he deserves our respect and appreciation. Cuba is just one more thing he has gotten right.

  7. Chrissin says:

Not only did Obama ignore them, but so did both BXVI & PF.
    Go Trump!

  8. graytown says:

The former President was known to wear a Che Guevara t-shirt under his suit.
Just kidding – but he certainly has a soft spot for Marxist and Despots.

  9. AnnTherese says:

Kathleen, I also believe Trump is exactly what our country needed. This is a fascinating time in our history– and we will be able to tell our grandchildren and great-grandchildren that “We were there!”– and witness to the Holy Spirit’s work through it all. President Trump and all working with him truly need our prayers now.

If these women are working on behalf of peace and justice, God bless and keep them. Persecution often accompanies that path… may their strength be unwavering.

I’m glad by the mention of the Cuban movement Ladies in White on this blog! Well, of course Obama mentioned the Damas de Blanco, and Joe Biden received Berta Soler -its leader- in Washington DC, and Berta also participated in the meeting of Obama with some leaders of Cuban independent civic movements in La Habana. However I think it does not necessarily reveals a real commitment with the Ladies’ cause in pro of democratization of Cuba and against Castro’s tyranny; but are gestures of great importance for the people fighting for freedom inside the island. The same for the gesture of Trump. By the way, the support showed by those gestures is far more great that the support showed by the current and specially by the former Archbishop of La Habana (Cardinal Ortega). I’m just seeing the beam on my own eyes.

    Kathleen10, Ann Therese, Zero….
I couldn’t agree with you more about President Trump. My husband and I were listening to the speech on Fox radio while driving. I said exactly the same thing to my husband “He is really a GOOD man. His past mistakes no longer bother me.”

The telling thing about Cuban – American relations is that Obama could easily have exerted pressure for at least minimal reforms on Cuba after the collapse of Venezuela and the cut rate oil they supplied to the Castros. He chose not to. President Trump has started a deliberate process, which may or may not succeed, but at least the Cuban people know they have someone in power in the US who cares.
