Over at Rorate there is a story about the SSPXer Bp. B. Fellay who in Lausanne (Switz.) made comments about the Motu Proprio. SSPXer Fellay claims that the Holy Father is sending… well… here is the piece.
He [the Pope] has decided to prepare its publication by sending "experts" to the "hot" nations, to the nations in which there could be difficulties. How much time will it be necessary to prepare the ground? I do not know anything! It is mentioned now [that it may be published] towards the end of the year.
…
Now, does that mean that is necessary to wait for the end of the year, that it will [be published] sooner… I truly do not know. … I bring you rumors, noises which come from Rome. (audio file)
While I am not sure just how that would work, this scenario is not outside the sphere of possibility for Pope Benedict. It sounds like him: persuade on the basis of reasoned arguments on the part of the well-informed.
He would be right to do it that way too.

Remember that our trust is in Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and not in any man or men no matter their rank in the church. God will feed His sheep and rescue His lambs in His own time and at His own pleasure. Offer up these feelings with the added statement: not my will but Thine be done, O Lord. 5/6/07 With all due respect to those involved the 64 billion dollar question is why is the action of sending emissaries to these countries even necessary? I think all of our posters know why and that is truly the most unfortunate of answers. The Pope has all the authority he needs but is unwilling, it appears, to exercise it without “greasing the skids” with the bishops first. Most unfortunate, indeed! Yet, think about it for a minute. If he were to issue a document that bishops felt free to disregard, how would that help the existing situation? It would be like adding fuel to the fire IMHO. Let us pray that he is successful in his efforts.

I agree with your points here. Our Holy Father wants to ensure that those who have labored for this for so long will not have labored in vain. As the Vicar of Peter, he needs to strengthen his brother bishops who may falter under the weight of what may come from many sectors after the MP is promulgated. I believe he is also, in a way, catechizing them as well!
As an Eastern Catholic looking in, I do see this as an exciting moment for the Latin Church. For too long the senses of many of the Latin faithful have not been trained properly for heaven! The restoration that is occuring is more than just a restoration of rite. It is a restoration of the pleroma of Catholic worship. How fitting it would be to have this issued, though, in the season of the Resurrection after so long a fast!

Gordo: As the Vicar of Peter, …
Oooppps… Vicar of Christ. “Vicar of Peter” would be a very different concept, not in keeping with Catholic teaching.
And yet, “Vicar of Peter” is the older, original title of the popes. Also, I am not sure whether “Vicar of Peter” is not catholic. It seems to me that it is!
“Vicar of Peter” might have been used sometime in history, but it is certainly not preferred and it is, actually, problematic. The better way of seeing this, that opens up to no error about the Petrine Ministry, is “successor of Peter” but “Vicar of Christ”.
I say let the problems come. In the past forty years we have pursuaded the Protestants outside of The Church of exactly nothing. The last thing we should be worrying about, even as the Church goes bankrupt from sex-abuse, is trying to pursuade those who want to have their way INSIDE the Church. They’ve had ample time to make up their own minds. Catholicism is not their hostage, bishop, priest or layman. Hard words, but sometimes that’s the way it shakes out. It’s nice when faith and reason go together, but the fact is that it is the reason that is subject to the faith, not the other way around. I say to the Holy Father, steel yourself and get on with it.
As much as I hate that the MP may have another delay, I know that all will work out for the best. Plus, I
just got a mental picture of some of the bishops in the problem diocese celebrating Mass with a Papal
appointed “liturgical advisor” watching over them to make sure they get it right. “Bishop ___, I spoke to
the Holy Father today, and he is very displeased by the way that you decided to take liberties with the
Eucharistic Prayer. He suggests that you read only what is printed on the page from now on…”

The title “Vicar of Peter” does not cast into doubt the primacy and supremacy of the Bishop of Rome vis-a-vis his brother bishops. My intent was just to highlight his ministry to “strengthen the bretheren” as Christ commissioned Peter to do. He stands as one who holds the keys in the midst of his brother apostles, and his authority is to strengthen the bonds of unity in the Church and to “till and keep” the Garden of the Church as its chief steward. To me this defines precisely the nature of his diakonia as the “servant of the servants of God”, a title very near and dear to our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II of blessed memory. This is proper to his role as head and occasional spokesperson for the college of bishops throughout the world.
All Bishops are, in a sense, “vicars of Christ” since they are successors to the apostles and He commissioned them all to make disciples of all nations. In fact, one could say that all the baptized faithful act as “vicars of Christ”, since we are called to bring Him to the world. The Bishop of Rome as Successor of St. Peter holds this title in a unique way, and the use of other titles do not change or diminsh this fact – rather they clarify it.

I think it does. It having been a title, doesn’t make it a good title.
