This might be superficial, but does anyone know what book he is holding?
It is wonderful when Bishops celebrate the TLM. What a great example.
I’ve been to several Tridentine Masses he’s offered. I intend to approach him once he’s bishop about possibly joining the seminary and especially about the older rite. It should interesting. Let’s continue praying. I know one parish has been praying for Bishop Mengeling’s sucessor for years.
I’ve heard good things about Bishop Boyea here in the Detroit Archdiocese, though I’ve never seen him or assisted at a Mass he celebrated. I pray (and expect) he will be a good shepherd for our neighbors in the Lansing Diocese.
I think he will have a somewhat easier time since the outgoing Bishop Mengeling is a good man who has done a great deal for that Diocese. For well over 10 years, there has been an indult TLM at All Saints in Flint and we attended a Solemn High Mass he celebrated there a few years ago – a very good sermon and a magnificent ceremony all around. I also know that he has a thriving vocations office and always took great interest in his seminarians. They are a good bunch of guys – I have met many of them since he has sent many to St. John Vianney in St. Paul, where my son is, and to Sacred Heart in Detroit (for Theology), where my wife teaches.
Unfortunately, he is very ill with cancer and must step down. I pray for his health and, if it must be, a peaceful and holy death.
Yes!!!!!!! *me doing a happy dance* I’m very glad our new Bishop is friendly towards the TLM.
woah!
Amazing.. Thanks be to God!
Brick by brick.
Lets pray that all bishops find an opportunity
to celebrate using the EF.
The key word here is “regular.” Bishop Boyea celebrates our TLM three or four times per year. He does it on his own initiative and is a most proficient celebrant. We discuss rubrics beforehand, and he practices the chanted readings prior to the day of Mass. He has also helped with organizational matters behind the scenes.
Lansing has been blessed with the appointment of this committed and holy man.
Hi Fr. Z,
I was on the blog for Fr. Rob Johansen who had good things to say about his former spiritual director.

The reason I asked about the book he is holding because I wanted to know-
Is there a particular type of book that is a standard for a pose such
as this? I have seen many pictures of saints and blesseds holding a book
of some type (I’m assuming it is the Bible or a Breviary)
Thanks
Yes! He was my rector back in the good old days of the Josephinum. Very good news for the faithful of Lasing.
Father,
Any idea on when the appointment is coming for the Diocese of Little Rock? That diocese has been without a bishop for over 20 months, and I believe that makes them the US see that has currently been without a bishop for the longest period of time (even longer than Lansing). What’s the holdup?
Thanks.

Wonderful news! This continues to show the direction that Rome
wishes to take and I am so happy; I pray for holy appointments to
the episcopate daily.
There will be some BIG changes in the next five years. If more appointments
are like this one, I can hardly wait.
Ave Maria!
I am very pleased that we will have such an Orthodox sounding Bishop. I expect good things from him! Thank you for your prayers Fr. Z.

IIRC, the ‘traditional’ book is the breviary.
I put a link up to an article Bishop Boyea wrote, in which he took on Fr. Donald Cozzens. It was a dandy.
See my blogpost for an extract and the link to the full article.
