A visit to Norfolk, VA

I am in Norfolk, VA right now.  I came to give a talk to the local chapter of Una Voce.   One of the wonderful things about coming to a place like this is the chance to have a tour of an aicraft carrier, this time, USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT.

It is hard to get a grip on the size of these amazing ships until you are standing near one.

With my host here, a Navy Commander, we went with the priest in charge of the St. Benedict chapel here, Fr. Willis, and met the chaplain of the TR, Fr. Johnson, and another chaplain Fr. Cusick who is also a columnist with The Wanderer.  We had a great tour of the ship and had lunch in the ward room.  I was very pleased to see that Fr. Johnson’s sacristy had everything necessary for celebrations of the TLM.  And he chapel is oriented properly.

Out on the breezy flight deck there is on the tower an item I wanted especially post for a friend of mine in Italy.

The flight deck is over 4 acres.

However, for my readers in the UK, I want you to know I was thinking of you too.

Right next to the TR is HMS ARK ROYAL, an aircraft carrier.

You can see the "ski jump" sticking on their flight deck for the Harriers.

Here are the four priests on the flight deck of #71, USS TR:

Fr. Willis, Fr. Z, Fr. Cusick, Fr. Johnson.

Totally exciting, Father. It’s cool to see that carrier, and her chapel. Does Father actually say Usus Antiquior aboard the carrier? How great that would be. It’s also cool to see a cassock on a carrier deck. What are the odds/opportunities…?

Thanks, again, Father. By the way, are there to see the Holy Father also? I am sure of it. :)

I found Fr. Willis to be an amazing homilist. There was something evangelical about him. I was right, he is a convert. I find the people at St. Benedict’s very friendly and I don’t mind the 45 minute drive from Virginia Beach. The SSPX congregation at the hotel seem to be an odd bunch.

As long as you’re in Norfolk you can get on I-64 tomorrow morning head to Richmond for Mass at St. Joseph’s a traditional Latin Mass parish. Low Mass at 8:30 am and High Mass at 11
I’m sure Father Adrian would welcome you

Father, do you believe this is trustworthy?

L’ennesimo caso?

As a retired Navy Chief I spent a lot of time on carriers out of San Diego and Norfolk. though mostly Norfolk.

Nice to see the pictures of you on deck.

  6. Timothy James says:

Looks very similar to the USS Lexington in Corpus Christi, TX! If you’re ever in South Texas you should check it out. It had a Chapel also but from what I remember it was made for multiple denominations so the altar wasn’t ad Deum.

  7. MG says:

Thank you so much for sharing your tour with us.

    Father Z

The final picture prompted me to wonder what a priest would historically wear under a cassock.

  9. Cacciaguida says:

Tcheh — all some of us ever get to tour is the USS Wisconsin (now a museum moored in downtown Norfolk)!

Anyway: great to meet you, to hear you, and to attend your Mass this morning!

P.S. I met Msgr. Schuler once: in Rome, in 1985, in connection with the Extraordiny Synod. I knew Al Matt at the time, and he introduced us.

  10. Br. Andrew says:

The one thing I really miss about my Navy days is being out to sea. There is nothing like it. And I bet as a Catholic Chaplain, you could always have the skipper change course so your altar is facing east!

I was on the TR for a Dependant’s cruise a few years back, way cool Padre! Welcome to the Old Dominion!

  12. Monica says:

Please send the Holy Father to Norfolk and Virginia Beach. The ones in charge of liturgy in the Richmond Diocese have clearly demonstrated that they do not embrace the liturgical teachings and directives of the Catholic Church when it comes to the Ordinary Form of the Mass. Why is it so difficult to locate the tabernacle in most of the Catholic Churches in this area? What is being done about this situation?

  13. It’s hard not to envy the crew’s opportunity to attend Mass daily. Our Marine son was able to hear the Mass exactly twice in nearly seven months in Iraq a few years ago. I hope the men’s spiritual needs will be better looked after in this deployment that will begin shortly.

  14. Thomas says:

Is that last picture of St. Pope Pius V’s Holy League? I didn’t know they had photography back then. Don John must have been too busy distributing Rosaries to pose in front of his war ship.

  15. Fr Kevin Willis says:

Historically, I imagine, one wears knee-breeches under the cassock. However, as these are a bit hard to locate at most post-modern haberdashers, I usually buy cheap black slacks, and cut them off just below the knee.

  16. Bigt says:

Growing up I never learned the Pacific War. I make up for that now with a voracious appetite for all things Navy; so thanks for the pictures Father Z!

  17. Patricia Gonzalez says:

Wow, I LOVE those ships! Strange for a woman to say this, but I’ve always had a “thing” for the US Navy, specifically for the great WWII admirals, Spruance, Halsey, Nimitz, et al. Must have been growing up on the island of Newfoundland that did it, LOL1 FDR and Churchill signed the Atlantic Charter in Placentia Bay, on the province’s south coast. I was born the year after the war ended, and my folks talked a lot about “when the war was on” during my childhood. The photos are great, Father, Thanks so much for posting them! As we say “down Home”, Long may your big jib draw! God bless!

  18. jaykay says:

Awesome ship. The Ark Royal beside it is very much smaller, although I think the RN has plans to build a new generation of more “traditional” carriers? I doubt they’ll be quite on the scale of the USN ones.

  19. giovanni says:

An interesting aside from George Weigel’s current Newsweek column, that may have some bearing. (Pun intended).

“He [Pius XI] was also the first pope to set foot on sovereign American soil. Having fled Rome and Garibaldi’s legion in 1849, Pius visited the USS Constitution, “Old Ironsides,” then berthed in Gaeta harbor. Capt. John Gwinn, USN, was court-martialed for allowing the pope aboard in tacit violation of American neutrality in Italian politics.”
