Congratulations to, and prayers for, his Eminence Antonio Card. Cañizares Llovera seem in order.
This site and some others mentioned more possible changes. It will be interesting to see how those turn out – the ball has started rolling.
I’m glad Cardinal Arinze has resigned. He really wasn’t very supportive of the de-restriction of the TLM.
Sal, Cardinal Arinze may have not been doing cartwheels over the TLM but he was supportive of Latin, chant, ad orientem worship, etc. But I am very pleased
with Cardinal Llovera’s appointment. I’m sure it augers well for even better things to come for the Church. Tom
From everything I have read, this is an excellent choice. Given his being a member of the Ecclesia Dei Commission, the hermeneutic of continuity seems to be working.
I think we all have to express our well wishes to His Eminence, in a sure hope the God will help him in carrying his work for the good our Holy Church.
I was pondering…
In the long run, would we not want all liturgical issues going through a single office? Perhaps with this appointment the process can begin to streamline and not have liturgical issues for OF being taken on by the CDW and EF by PCED. OK – so it may take a few years, but if the head of the CDW is a master of both liturgies does it not make sense to eventually PCED fade?
Just a thought.
I’ll miss Cardinal Arinze. I’ve corresponded with him a few times and he is very kind.
Why would this mean Ranjith would be staying on for a while? Evidently he isn’t much appreciated. When a promotional spot is given to someone from the outside rather than to one who is already there is sort of a slap. Ranjith was my pick but anyway.

“so it may take a few years, but if the head of the CDW is a master of both liturgies does it not make sense to eventually PCED fade?”
The competency of the PCED includes far more than addressing issues related to the EF liturgy. This is the dicastery responsible for the regularization and maintenance of traditionalist Catholics throughout the world. Its liturgical responsibilitie could fade away, being assumed by the CDW. However, is more important tasks are far afield from the purpose of the CDW.
Matt Q said: Why would this mean Ranjith would be staying on for a while?
To ensure continuity and smooth operations within the dicastery.

On the contrary, it is the usual practice to promote someone from the outside – it would have been quite unusual if Archbishop Ranjith had been named prefect, desirable as that would have been. Bringing in someone from outside helps to keep ambitious prelates from building a personal empire.
Does anyone know what Cardinal Arinze will do now? I always liked him.
Does anyone know the prefect’s stance to the celebration of the Mozarabic rite?
