Dr. Johnson speaks

Today the Laudator gave us a reflection from Dr. Johnson.

No Satisfaction
Samuel Johnson, The Idler, No. 88 (Saturday, December 22, 1759):

He that in the latter part of his life too strictly enquires what he has done, can very seldom receive from his own heart such an account as will give him satisfaction.

Today, living high on the hog as I do, I sat beneath his chair and eat fish and chips… as someone’s guest.

  1. “Living high on the hog as I do” and the necessity for logging on to comment…ah, I sense the trolls must have been here. Whatever. Ignore them. [There are some pathetically creepy people out there!]

I hope you had malt vinegar and a pint of bitters with those fish and chips! [I did!]

Thanks for soaking up the atmosphere of Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese for me!

  2. Jon says:

    Father,

20 years ago when I visited London for the first time, the first thing I did after visiting the Tower was seek out Dr. Johnson’s house on Gough Square not far from St. Paul’s. In fact, my favorite vanity picture is of myself standing in the great doctor’s doorway.

If you haven’t been, I hope you get a chance to go.

  3. Jon: Yes… I did find Dr. Johnson’s house.
