“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”
- Fulton Sheen

"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

Prayer Before Using The Internet HERE
Almighty and eternal God, who created us in Thine image and bade us to seek after all that is good, true and beautiful, especially in the divine person of Thine Only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, grant, we beseech Thee, that, through the intercession of Saint Isidore, Bishop and Doctor, during our journeys through the internet we will direct our hands and eyes only to that which is pleasing to Thee and treat with charity and patience all those souls whom we encounter. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
I met him last Spring on my priesthood retreat at New Mellory Abbey in Iowa. What a great and holy man. RIP.
He was one of the last of the “old guard” of Notre Dame. He and old Professor Tom Stritch were the part of the “laymen’s brigade” that helped make Notre Dame the Catholic university it used to be. They don’t make them like that anymore. I wonder if Notre Dame will even bother taking notice? Sad, sad.
Professor McInerny published a wonderful article he wrote back in March of 2009 about the invitation of President Obama to speak at the Notre Dame graduation. It’s well worth reading even now:

Prayers for his soul and for the soul of Notre Dame.
Dr. McInerny had a great three-part series on EWTN called What Went Wrong With Vatican II. I also enjoyed his book, The Red Hat.
He will truly be missed, and he was a loyal Son of the Church.
May he truly rest in peace.
May he rest in peace.
Réquiem ætérnam dona ei Dómine; et lux perpétua lúceat ei. Requiéscat in pace. Amen.
He was an excellent writer, and staunch defender of the faith. May he rest in peace.
Thank you for the news, Father Z. I will remember him in my prayers.
I remember reading his novel The Red Hat in the winter of 2004-2005. As it happened, reading it helped me prepare psychologically for Pope John Paul II’s passing (since there is a conclave or two in the story); born in the late 70s, I had never known another pope, so this was of some comfort. I also enjoyed the characterization of the hero professor, who, I remember, was frustrated at the culture wars and being categorized as a “conservative” by fellow academics when he was, if anything, in the mould of late 19th century Catholic (Classic) Liberals like Belloc. Was the character perhaps semi-autobiographical?
Thanks to the others for the links to some of his writings; there’s much of his work I haven’t read.
Oh, how sad….
May Professor McInerny rest in peace.
I had forgotten that he wrote the Father Dowling Mysteries. Always liked watching the TV series based on them.
Gee, I wonder if my former boss knew him when he attended ND-he graduated in 1953….
Dr. McInerny was, until his death, one of the very, very few living Catholic intellectuals for whom I have great respect.
Réquiem ætérnam dona ei Dómine; et lux perpétua lúceat ei. Requiéscat in pace. Amen.
Ralph McInerny was one of the finest voices of authentic Catholicism on the Notre Dame campus. He was also my neighbor for many years when I was young. It was a privilege to know him. Requiescat in Pace! Tom
Ralph’s brother Dennis is a friend and former colleague.
RM left a serious Catholic footprint.
“They don’t make them like that anymore. I wonder if Notre Dame will even bother taking notice? Sad, sad.”
His funeral was held this morning at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. There were several dozen CSC and other priests on the altar, including the current and former presidents of the University.
I think that Notre Dame noticed.
One can read online his excellent translation of St. Thomas Aquinas’s Scriptum super Sententiis.
