“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”
- Fulton Sheen

"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

looks very yummy! I prefer my cookies with ice-cold milk, but to each his own…
I prefer warm Ovaltine; a classic, timeless tradition.

Those cookies look beautiful. What is the secret I wonder to sending them by post such that they arrive looking as perfect as coming out of the oven? Once I tried to send a batch to my brother but alas they reached their destination in smithereens.
Aww, that is so sweet, Fr. Z! Your mom must be so very proud of you. Christmas blessings to you, with gratitude!
Benedetta, Layers of bubble wrap? Tissue paper? Is there an angel for protection of mailed cookies?
I am very glad she did not try to mail you the espresso. Chocolate chip cookies are indeed a delight.
By sheer coincidence, my daughter is just pulling the last of a batch of chocolate chip cookies out of the oven under my supervision.
There is an engagement in her future, and therefore some intensive instruction in cooking is taking place. She has been my able assistant for years, but it’s different to take the lead.
Thanks for the tip, Banjo Girl!
AmericanMother, may your daughter enjoy many years of Christmas cookie baking!
Fr. Z., can your mother temporarily adopt my wife and I long enough to send us some cookies? We need something to go with our Mystic Monk coffee. Thanks.
Sorry to disagree but it is MY mother who makes the best chocolate chip cookies in the world.
ALong with the best peach cobbler, best peanut brittle, best chocolate pie, best cinammon rolls, best roast beef and gravy, best caramel pie, and best strawberry shortcake. Among other things.
ttucker: No. The cosmos is on my side in the case of the Chocolate Chip Cookies. The other things, especially the baked items, I will not take a stand on except, perhaps the Chocolate Pie.
They look like tasty cookies. It looks like she used the Toll House recipe.
Yummy! Nothing says “My son the priest – such a good boy – I’m so proud of him but if I tell him he gets the swelled head and then he can’t hear confessions so good” like cookies from Mother.
It is a truism, I think in an ontological way, that our mother’s cookies, in essence, are always the best in our eyes. This struck me between the brow, and brought back memories for me, as my mother is gone now, and God willing, enjoying her eternal reward.
Thanks for spurring some great memories.
Ed
Yes espresso is the only way to have coffee, maybe a little bit machiatto.
Someone on food-tv said that the exact melting point of chocolate is 98.6 degrees… another gift to us from the tender Heart of our Lord!
Does Mystic Monk produce espresso coffee? What kind of machine does Fr. Zed use? Inquiring minds want to know!
Wow, Father Z, it is hard to imagine your mum. It is hard to imagine you as a little kid. The cookies in the photo indicate an excellent mum….
When I first saw the picture I thought you were having a nice porter with your cookies!
I never thought a liturgical blog would make me hungry. I hope you have enough to share.

Ovaltine is good period. Try just eating it by the spoon straight out of the jar.

Did you ever have them in Rome. There was a place in, I think, the Jewish Quarter that sold them.
robtbrown: Oh yes, I went there. It was just up from Giggetto near the Portico d’Ottavia. They were reputed to have very good Chocolate Chip Cookies. They were okay. Their Peanut Butter Cookies were far better. It was a bit of an oasis, however. Too bad the shop didn’t survive.
Benedetta: My parents discovered the protective virtues of reused Pringle tubes (for the appropriate gauge cookies) then packed next to each other snugly in a box.
Father Z.: And are you and your mother willing to reveal her recipe so that we may attempt pale imitations?
Father,
The cookies look delicious!!! I’d have them with some oolong tea.
Chocolate chip cookies: black and white. Obviously, a Dominican innovation. QED.
Once again I find that I must be counted as a member of the uncultured.
I can’t imagine anything besides very cold water or white milk with cc cookies.
Ovaltine, chocolate milk, or coffee would not go well.
I have never had espressso, but I can’t see it going so well either.
Like I said I am uncultured I suppose.
The cookies look quite yummy. My wife just did a cookie exchange party. Most of them were ok, but the ladies all tried to be fancy this year. It’s hard to beat good old chocolate chip.
You are a lucky guy Father Z. I always miss my parents, but especially at this time of year. My mom would make fudge (with black walnuts), pumpkin pie, banana pudding, cherry yum-yum, and her great lemom pound cake. No wonder we all got fatter around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Mmmm chocolate-chip biscuits dunked in English Breakfast tea.

I agree, how did you get such a nice bit of crema?
Those cookies look mighty yummy. You are one lucky boy, Father Z. Merry Christmas blessings to you and your mother. Tom
Oooo, those chocolate chip cookies are making me hungry, Father Z!
Your mom is blessed to have such a son as you.
‘MARY CHRIST-MASS’ [to use the favorite saying of a traditional priest I once met] to you and to your mom!
You got your ‘culinary genes’ from her, that’s for sure!
Father Z:
What the best espresso in Rome? For me, so far: Tazza d’Oro, via degli Orfani, 84 (at the Pantheon). You’ve come to Castle Corbenic, you’ve made it to the mystical city of Sarras, you’ve found The Holy Grail. And the altar … I mean the bar, is long enough so that you can get to the rail soon enough.
