Yep–noticed that with the high quality of education today even journalism school grads can’t spell ChicaGo…nor can they use spell check. Also, that Editors aren’t much more adept than writers.
Go Pack!
Must be that zany Wisconsin dialect. I hear that as an expression of solidarity, the scoreboard operator in Chicaco is planning on using “Gren Bay” and “Packerz”. But that’s just a rumor.
Whut’s evry buddy talkin bout? I dohnt cee the problum.
It’s not an editorial comment?
wee hef a noo ejukashunal sistim kald “inventive spelling.” werks grate.
South of Springfield, IL, is an antipathy toward Chicago (not helped by recent tax increases which will send $ north of I-80–rant over). We are mostly STL, MO, sports fans. We have to have a fallback for football right now. So…
Go Packers!
Go Stillers!
Besides, we don’t need the O complicating Super Bowl security.
Because the brain truly expects to see “Chicago” and there aren’t a lot of other words that would fit in that context, we actually aren’t reading the end of the word. It’s an energy-saving technique for our neurons, but honestly, spell-check should have caught that one.
I stopped a magazine from going out the door with “Taking The Reigns” on the cover. I was the one doing the final proofing and the previous ten people had already signed off on the magazine.
Their proof reader couldn’t get a job with a skywriting company.
Isn’t Chicaco the name of Natty Bumpo’s trusty Indian sidekick in James Fenimore Cooper’s Leatherstocking novels? (Sorry, I took that from Mark Twain’s essay on Fenimore Cooper’s literary errors.) Or, perhaps, it’s a Midwestern version of salsa dancing?
In Christ,
Fr. Z, a quick question about tomorrow.
Is it still a day of penance or is the penitential day transferred to Monday?
I ask especially thinking of those who make their penance the long inconvenient trip to Washington and then March in the cold harrassed by the Obama administration’s “new keep off the museum stairs and grass rules.”
My question would also have liturgical implications. Should the missa pro pace be offered on Jan. 22, 24 or both days?
What happened to the front page editor? Actually, I couldn’t see it for a little bit. I think the brain self-corrects stuff like that. Still isn’t that their job?
Whoops-that’s a HUGE mistake! What, no proofreaders out there?
Go Jets! That’s who I want to see reach the Super Bowl!
It’s a phonetic spelling in the “whole language” tradition.
It’s a disparaging pun on “kaka”.

(Making the rounds on Facebook today…)
I have never understood the American obession with a game where 5 miniutes of game play takes half an hour.
Those IDIOTS! They spelled CHICANO wrong!
Who cares? As PeggyR put it so well:
Go Stillers!
This headline is even better:
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Picture-New-Orleans-newspaper-s-Jets-Patriots-t?urn=nfl-309032
Copy editor fell asleep on the keyboard again…
“I don’t give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way. ” — commonly attributed to Mark Twain
Normally I would laugh, but ATM I can’t bring myself to do so (depressed Patriots fan)
S Schmude: It was the makeup editor or layout artiste. Copyreaders know how to spel.
They feel the same about us. Sun-Times columnist Richard Roeper wrote this week that Chicagoland is better than much smaller Green Bay by every measure, except drive-by shootings and corruption. He referred to Green Bay as a “city” in quotes like that.
The Green Bay Press-Gazette got sweet payback by spelling his city Chicaco in a huge front page headline, though inadvertently, the paper said. Who can concentrate on typing when the biggest game going back forever or longer is coming up?
http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/114338619.html
You know… I don’t think this headline, even spelled properly… is quite the thing, in this era of the “New Civility”.
Think about the violence it might inspire?
Yesterday I read a story about a restaurant in Texas serving lion meat tacos.
Maybe this is the new chickadee meat tacos.
EXCHIEF,
You know what they say. “Spell
chequeCzech is hear two stay!” I would humbly suggest that the answers include better education and a willingness to use a dictionary when uncertain of the spelling/meaning of a word, not an automated program.I am also reminded of an Episcopal Church seminarian who used the word pericope in an answer on the General Ordination Exam. Of course the examinee was using a spell checker to “proofread” the exam answers. And, like so many of us who become impatient with such tedious tasks, ultimately began striking the Accept button, only to discover upon rereading the text after submitting the final answers that pericope had been indadvertently changed to periScope. Terribly embarrassing, that.
Pax et bonum,

Editor: I’m really sorry Boss. It won’t happen again.
Boss: GO PACK!
Editor: Yes, GO PACK!
Boss: But I’m not the one leaving…
The Bear players already have this posted in their locker rooms. If they weren’t motivated before…
Irish Girl is exactly right…
J – E – T – S
JETS – JETS – JETS ! ! !
Why is this shocking? Everyone knows Packer fans can’t spell.
LOL @Bryan…
aw that a while back and I have a 12 year old who is severely Dyslexic… He can’t read that AT ALL.. If 55%. CAN read it, the others are either Dyslexic or use the other side of their brain for decoding..
That is HORRIFYING when you really think about it…so many kids and adults go undiagnosed..
Pray for them..
GO BEARS!!! We’re gonna STOMP you!!
Go Green Bay, Beat ChicacObama!!
It could be worse… the New Orleans Times-Picayune recently ran this headline on an inside page:
Jets-Patriots jumphead goes
herey barllskjdlf fkdasd fg asdf
Apparently the “dummy” headline placed on the page before printing to save space for when the game results were final, got printed.
Hopefully no one will make the same mistake and print “Bears-Packers hedline goes hrflfjaskl” or something similar.
I don’t understand any of that. Being a native of the south I am only fluent in Bubbabonics…
