NYC, Manhattan, Holy Innocents: Solemn TLM – Ascension THURSDAY (Be not afraide!)

Those of you in the area of NYC, can go to Holy Innocents in Manhattan (37th btwn Brdwy & 7th) for a Solemn Mass in the Extraordinary Form (would that I were celebrant!) tomorrow evening, Thursday.. Ascension THURSDAY.

Thursday evening at 6:15. Please note the adjusted time. The mass schedule at Holy Innocents’ is altered because of the Holy Day of Obligation.

The music program:

Prelude: Chorale Prelude on LLANFAIR (1994) by McNeil Robinson (b. 1943)
Mass Ordinary: Mass ‘Be not afraide’ by John Sheppard (c. 1515–1560)  [Be not afraid, this is “Be not afraide” not “Be not afraid”.]
Motet at Communion: Jesu nostra redemptio by William Byrd (1540–1623)
This text was the compline hymn for Ascension in the Sarum use.
Recessional Hymn: Hail the day that sees Him rise (Llanfair)
Postlude: L’Ascension (1933) by Olivier Messiaen (1908–1992)
IV. Prière du Christ montant vers son Père

Trust me, Father, we here in NYC wish you were the celebrant as well. It will be magnificent, starting tonight with the Vigil Mass. As Father Faber said, it is the most beautiful thing this side of heaven. We are so blessed here in New York. This city may be modern Babylon, but as the Apostle Paul says, where sin abounds, grace does much more abound.

I too think that the wonderful people who have worked so hard at building up the Mass at this Church have a very special reward waiting for them. They have given us a priceless gift.

If it makes you feel any better, it is extremely hot and humid here today, and we are even under a tornado watch until 8:00 (very unusual for this area).

“Be Not Afraide” as opposed to “Be Not Afraid” — LOL!
We’re having a sung mass tomorrow night at our FSSP parish too… Phoenix, AZ… far, far from New York but the same glorious mass!

  3. Great news! Also, if anyone’s in the Southeastern Michigan area, there will also be an Ascension Thursday TLM at Old St. Patrick Church in Ann Arbor, MI. It will be a Missa Cantata and will begin at 7pm.

You will all be in my prayers tonight at Holy Innocents, West 37th Street, NYC. I will take a few pictures and hope to send them to Father Z. As an aside, Playwright Eugene O’Neill was baptized in Holy Innocents. His parents were married in the now defunct National Shrine to St. Anne, on East 12th Street. Only the facade remains now…..

May I suggest that those appreciative of or attending Masses there write a snail mail letter to the pastor who added this Mass to the schedule.
Sometimes even the smallest note of thanks can encourage a pastor with many headaches.
