When I have posted about good causes that need support (read: money) you readers have always been prompt and generous.
Were every reader of this blog to give up buying their coffee or a sandwich today and make a donation… on this Friday of Lent…

I ask you to be prompt and generous on this Lenten Friday of penance and almsgiving. Please do as the ancient Romans did during their Lent: donate money they would have spent on food to the poor.
There are poor Benedictine monks who need help. Today, for the Benedictines, is the feast of St. Benedict.
The monks of Silverstream Priory, Fr Mark Kirby’s monastery, need money. They have been pretty much begging for money, because they may lose their property. They have received 100,000 euro. They still need 500,000 to buy the property.
They also have vocations. Those vocations are at risk.
Fr Mark says:
“Promising young vocations are knocking at our door, but the door does not belong to us, nor does the house, nor the land. The future of Silverstream Priory is at stake. Please do something to re–establish monastic life in County Meath, not far from the Hill of Slane where Saint Patrick, long ago, kindled his Paschal Fire.”
They take Paypal–scroll down at the link to see.
I know it’s really easy to think, “Oh, I’ll write a check and drop it in the mail…later.” But you know how that goes.
There is more information at the Vultus Christi blog that is associated with the monastery. Vultus Christi blog
Good job they accept PayPal, that way I could help them out too. :)
Done. By the way, the Priory also sponsors the Confraternity of Jesus, King of Love, a global prayer apostolate that reaches out to (among others) the emotionally and sexually abused and those struggling with deeply rooted habits of sin and addiction.
There are so very many in our broken world who struggle with these issues. How easy it can be for us to affirm spiritual solidarity through prayer — or to isolate in modernistic self-absorption.
done.
On the Feast of Saint Benedict?!? Of course! I’m in.
Thank you so much for posting about this, Father. Dom Kirby’s writings and homilies have been a wonderful blessing to me, personally (as you have been), and the mission they’ve undertaken in Ireland is desperately needed. They are doing great work and drawing attention but don’t have the money. THANKS TO YOU for the exposure you are bringing to this cause.
Done, Father, with joy on this feast of Saint Benedict.
Done. With absolute joy!
Glad to be able to help. Thank you, Father Zuhlsdorf, for bringing their need to our attention.
I admire Fr Kirby greatly and have only recently discovered that he’s in Ireland! I have a bit of an ulterior motive in wanting to keep those monks in Meath because I am the daughter of Irish immigrants who are now in their 80s, but most of our family remains in Ireland. And most of them have lost their faith. I know the prayers and good works of the monks at Silverstream Priory will have a powerful effect. I pray it is so, anyway! God bless and keep them! ~ annie
Done. I signed up for their newsletters as well so that I can donate in the future.
Just sent some Euro across the pond… gotta appreciate paypal… Thank you Father for bringing such worthy causes to our attention. My CCD class will offer up The Angelus during tomorrow’s class for the monks.
This post had just the right blend of ease-of-access and guilt to make this happen.
