The Bishop of Hong Kong, John Card. Tong Hon, has come under fire from the promoters of deviant sex because he defends marriage.
Gay lobby and Western consuls against the bishop of Hong Kong
Hong Kong (AsiaNews) – In the past few days, Card John Tong Hon, Bishop of Hong Kong, and the Catholic Church have been accused of “discrimination” by LGBT groups and representatives of Western governments in the territory for defending the institution of the family based on the union of a man and a woman, and for warning the faithful against any official recognition of gay unions as equal to the traditional family.
The war of words reached a crescendo yesterday afternoon when some 10,000 people from the Pink Alliance and other similar associations led the city’s Gay Pride parade, calling on the Government of Hong Kong to ban all ” discrimination “against people based on their sexual orientation, including gay marriage.
The consuls of France, Britain, Germany, United States, Sweden, Ireland, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, Finland, as well as representatives of the European Union and the British Council attended Hong Kong’s Seventh Gay Pride.
For York Chow Yat-ngok, who heads Hong Kong’s Equal Opportunities Commission, “our religion taught us [. . .] not to discriminate [against] people”. Caroline Wilson, Britain’s consul general, also talked about “discrimination”. The Pink Alliance ridiculed Cardinal John Tong Hon’s suggestion that gay marriage would trigger “social disorder”.
All the criticism stems from a statement the bishop released last Thursday. In it, the cardinal urged the faithful to play an active role – as the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world” – in promoting the notion of the family as a union between a man and a woman, and in staying vigilant against groups who, in the name of “rights” and against discrimination, want to bring before the Hong Kong legislative council plans to give gay marriage the same recognition as the traditional marriage, including the right to adopt children.
In his message, the cardinal also noted that a so-called Christian students’ organisation recently held a ‘Workshop on lovemaking techniques’ at one of Hong Kong’s universities with the participation of sex workers showing how to use sex toys and perform erotic massage.
In view of this, the bishop of Hong Kong called on Catholics to cast their ballot in upcoming District Council elections taking into account candidates’ views on gay rights.
Reactions to Card Tong’s stance has tended to juxtapose his position to that of Pope Francis and the recently concluded Synod, emphasising the need to end discrimination against homosexuals and to highlight the pope’s greater “openness”.
Mgr Michael Yeung Ming-cheung, auxiliary bishop of Hong Kong, said that the Church does not discriminate against homosexuals, but against their acts. Likewise, in his statement, the cardinal noted that the Synod on the Family reaffirmed the traditional notion of the family, as a union between a man and a woman.
Evil is on the rise.
Coming soon to a city near you. Our pastor gave a stirring homily a few weeks back about the importance of not keeping quiet on controversial topics. He encouraged us to speak out often and publicly on marriage and respect for life and the importance of reclaiming a sense of modesty. Based on the looks of the people I think half the parishioners in attendance were confused about why he thought that was important and why he was mentioning it at all. Unfortunately the people at large aren’t aware of the agenda of satan and his minions in our midst.
Cardinal John Tong Hon was not allowed to attend the “Synod on the Family” for the stated reason of his age, 76 … Riiiight … Kasper is 82 … Danneels is 82 … Riiiight, age.
This is a terrible situation. Those in favor of social and sexual dysfunction are able to use the Pope’s own words, and the “perception” of what the Synod is saying against those who stand up for orthodox doctrine. The Pope could speak out clearly about this but seems to have no inclination to do so. It looks like the Holy Father fiddles while the world burns.
No surprise at all…a faithful shepherd speaks out and is attacked by those enabled by the MSM, governments, and unfaithful shepherds.
My prayers for you Fr Z, Card Hon, and all priests and religious who are faithful to our Lord. God Bless you!
Thomas Tucker, I don’t see how the Pope could possibly speak out more clearly than he has. He stands in direct opposition to those who stand up for orthodox doctrine. He is their adversary.
Bravo to His Excellency’s courage. They scorn Bp. Hon faces from the wolves in the secular world pales in comparison to the flogging he might receive from the Church. If Pope Francis’ treatment of the FFI is any indication, Bp. Hon very much needs our prayers.
Kudos to the Bishop for speaking out like a true Shepard of souls. For those of us who struggle with SSA and spend our lives trying to remain faithful to the teachings of the Church, the attacks by these monsters on this holy Bishop is like an attack on us. I pray that he will not cave like so many Western Bishops would under this pressure and will thereby be a beacon of hope and a rock of true Catholic witness for his flock.
The pope and the synod have only amplified and accelerated the demonic attacks against God and the Church, from within and without. We are going to see things ratchet up from here in the secular world because not only is there no resistance, there is obvious support. Horrible.
The flock is still hoping for our Bishops to come out courageously and speak plainly about what is going on. Archbishop Athanasius Schneider has come the closest thus far, but we are very short of what would be needed. Things are going to have to be stated plainly, no hedging, no politeness. We must eventually get there, but we better not take too long.
This is all under the radar. Most Catholics are sleeping, which helps the enemy.
“The consuls of France, Britain, Germany, United States, Sweden, Ireland, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, Finland, as well as representatives of the European Union and the British Council attended Hong Kong’s Seventh Gay Pride.”
Is there any reason why these consuls would attend this parade? I mean, any non-ideological reason? Do consuls regularly attend such parades by other groups?
When I first saw the headline for this post, I thought the bishop had been literally, physically attacked! That he is attacked verbally and in the media is no surprise. That homosexualists seek to silence those holding to the traditional view of marriage and family by criminalizing such views as “discriminatory” is horrible but also not much of a surprise. It seems no dissent is allowed in this brave new tolerant, liberal, open, accepting, diverse, progressive era.
P.S. the auxillary bishop’s statement that the Church discriminates not against homosexual persons but against acts is too fine a distinction for the gay rights movement. A distinction without a difference, they might charge. I fear it is only a matter of time before the attacks on those who defend marriage, like Bishop Hon, move from the media into the streets, from words to fists and worse.
Oh, but don’t you all see that Card. Hon is an adept of conservatism? And “it is useless to look for solutions in conservatism and fundamentalism, in the restoration of practices and outdated forms that aren’t even able to be culturally meaningful.” Ouch!

The courageous Cardinal Hon is much to be admired and, I hope, emulated, but we must all engage. Life Site News carried an article with a quotation of Bishop Sheen’s that seems appropriate:
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops, and your religious act like religious.”
God Bless this Holy Catholic Bishop. Listen to him and act.
Orphrey: me too, my heart sank when I saw the title. I thought–oh no – physical attack.
This for sure is an forewarning. We will all be “attacked” for sticking to the Magisterium of the Church. For the first time, in my view and lifetime, what the Holy Father says is not aligned with the Magisterium of the Church. So we will have to choose between what Pope Francis says and the Magisterium.
What a terrible position for a faithful Catholic to be put in.
“But the very essence of the Catholic Religion was treason to the very idea of man.” (Robert Hugh Benson, “The Lord of the World”).
What possible business is this of Western governments? Their interference here is Left Wing Cultural Imperialism of the first order, as well as a lack of respect for religious freedom and freedom of speech, sort of like the Chinese Communist government.
Prophetic, wasn’t he? Of course, he was only taking Our Lord’s warning to heart. “And you shall be hated by all men for my name’ s sake:…” Stunning how quickly things are devolving, though. I’m reminded of another favorite book. “That I should live to see such days…” ~ King Theoden.
Is this the Cardinal who was told he was too old to participate in the Synod? (Unlike, of course, +Danneels or +Kasper – spring chicks that they are).
I’m no fan of the Chinese Communist Party, but I sincerely hope that the party leaders in Beijing nip this homosexualist garbage off the bud right now. They should also tell the shameless, Western consular officials to stop interfering in domestic Hong Kong affairs.
The enemy of our enemy is our ally in this fight.
Paulo, I also read the comments just made in Florence by the Bishop of Rome. I am beginning to think we have a new-Joachim de Fiore on our hands.
I don’t think we should even talk about the Pope’s comments in Florence.
When I was born Ireland was a Catholic country.
We’ve moved since.
Fr Z writes ‘Evil is on the rise’. A grim phrase to contemplate indeed.
I have just read about a Priest in France who has deliberately pushed over and smashed to pieces a statue in his church of the Sacred Heart reportedly saying ‘That’s one less.’ The report mentions that last year he destroyed another statue of Our Lady also because he does not like the style. Were these evil acts or is the Priest merely misguided?
In Britain during the Reformation, and in France during the Revolution statues were smashed or burnt but to read of a Priest doing such a thing today is frightning. I agree some statues are not to everyone’s taste. In my own parish for many years a large statue of the Sacred Heart was ‘banished’ to the tower. It was later re-instated and happily still stands in a prominent position. Surely the Priest who took exception to the statues should just have quietly removed them from his church?
One has to wonder just a bit if the godless communists that effectively control Hong Kong, aren’t the ones stirring this pot to remove their arch-enemy from China–the true God?
I’m almost amazed more by what increasingly gets left out by the media in a lot of these reports.
The U.S.A. is considered in the eyes of the world to be an ideal – as far as democracies go. In a democracy, once the peoples’ core right – the right to vote, gets taken away, it’s an indicator that an evil oppression is taking root. We could probably give it various other names, but its nature is both evil and oppressive . . . and it makes slaves out of all of us : In a particular way members of governing bodies, of Supreme Court justices, and even heads of countries bow down before it . . . and do its bidding. (My own country isn’t any better – the people here just elected a pro-abortion leader who wants to legalize marijuana. . .
Whatwere they thinking ?)
I believe the Bishop of Hong Kong, John Cardinal Tong Hon was trying to illustrate to the world the model gone wrong – trying to illustrate what happens to peoples’ freedom (freedom of thought, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, parents’ rights as first educators of their children) in an ideal democracy once a moral lie gets whined into legislation, where it rampantly subverts the natural truth while intimidating free citizens -gradually limiting them into acting (and thinking) a certain way.
Over at Catholic Culture, their report Hong Kong Cardinal Speaks out Against sexual-orientation Legislation contains a critical quote from Cardinal Hon that other news outlets seem to be leaving out:
If one wished to know unequivocally whether legislated recognition of same-sex
marriagewas bad for true democracy, all the proof they’d ever need is right there in that one sentence.
. . . Funny how that one got left out . . . Can you imagine the US consul trying to justify or respond to that statement . . . I mean , once they got back from attending their gay pride parade and had time to think it over ?
People, this is all planned throughout the entire world. Why are people surprised? This is the beginning of tribulation, now, yes now. The West and all countries effected happily by the one-time Christian West are now under the power, not only of those who hate the Catholic Church (Masons, liberals, Marxists, and so on) but by the powers that one cannot see, the demons who are now in charge of certain areas–yes, in charge, like seen battles when enemies take over territories.
I went to a conference by a leading exorcist this past year and I shared on my blog that this priest noted that America is now under the banner NOT of Christ, but of three of the five generals of Satan, who has a hierarchical army in mockery and in battle with that of Christ and His angels. People actually use their free will and choose to fight under the battle of Satan.
Do not kid yourselves. All these happenings are connected, as those who hate the influence of the one, true, holy, Catholic and apostolic Church are now in power. We are not in power, except that the war has been won, but not each individual battle. We shall suffer through those battles.
I have visited Europe six times in five years and saw this movement against the Church first-hand since 2011. But, the fight is much older. Blame who you want to blame, but we are all to blame in some way for cooperating with the pursuit of money, for greed, the pursuit of status and honors, and so on.
I made personal solemn promises two months ago, in order to be more prepared to fight the enemies which are seen and not seen. I suggest that instead of surprise, Catholics consider making promises of poverty, chastity and obedience in order to make the Church stronger in this time of growing evil against the Bride of Christ. We need a stronger army ourselves, not merely complainers or blamers.
Pray, fast, dedicate yourself to the Church, to God. We do not have much time in the States.
Blessed are you when men shall revile you and persecute you and say all manner of evil against you falsely for my sake. Rejoice and be EXCEEDINGLY GLAD for great is your reward in heaven.
I am constantly reminded of this beatitude because we sing it almost every Sunday in the Byzantine liturgy. I will pray for this good Cardinal as he carries his cross in the Lord’s footsteps.
Gail F says: “Is there any reason why these consuls would attend this parade? I mean, any non-ideological reason? Do consuls regularly attend such parades by other groups?”
I can’t think of any reason why a consul should attend anything other than a parade of national significance, and then only if invited, for reasons of diplomatic protocol. Perhaps they were all invited to this one, but if by the organisers, not a State or City Authority, then I’d imagine that they’d need to have considered it very carefully, again for reasons of protocol, so as not to tread on toes. And diplomats are famously cautious about this: they have to be. For example, SS”M” is not legal in China, and I don’t think that country is exactly famous for its tolerance of “alternative lifestyles”, so surely it was indelicate, at the very least, for people in the important position of consul to be there? And the Chinese are sticklers for face and protocol generally, so… something doesn’t seem to add up.
As for the attendance of my own country’s (Ireland’s) consul: yeah, well… since we’re leading the world on this issue, don’t yah know, it doesn’t surprise me that they’d want to jump up and down in their pathetic, cringing eagerness to show how teddibly (sorry Noel Coward) sophisticated and grown-up we’ve become, sitting at the cool kids’ table and all that. Go sabhála Dia sinn. Deus adjuvat nos.
A gay theatre colleague posted on Facebook last night a piece “investigating” the history of Salvation Army’s “anti-gay” policies (read: doctrine) and urging all who value “equality” to boycott donations to the red kettle this season. Further and more chilling was the author’s opinion that the Sal Army should have the government powers that be deny them charitable status.
Don’t think this ain’t coming for ALL of us: Catholic; Orthodox; orthodox Judaism; etc.
And here I had been thinking that the goal of a consulate was to promote the business interests of the consul’s nation within another nation.
“…a so-called Christian students’ organisation recently held a ‘Workshop on lovemaking techniques’ at one of Hong Kong’s universities…”
Of all the things in life that are more fun to figure out as you go!
Supertradmum: I have looked on your blog for information you mentioned–about the five generals of satan, etc.–but cannot find it. What is the date and title of the entry? Thank you.
