  1. Kevin Fogarty says:

OK, ??????? is something about the northwest winds. The other word seems to be something like ??????? which doesn’t make sense. Who knows what the letters stand for? Seems to be a map (of urban districts?) with something running through them (an aquaduct?)

  2. Gregg the Obscure says:

well, it’s greek to me (and really to everyone given the orthography)

  3. Kevin Fogarty says:

Well WordPress won’t represent Greek. It seems to be etesai and pauonia

  4. JustaSinner says:

Didn’t we see this in Raiders of the Lost Ark???

  5. ex seaxe says:

?????? is an adjective, in the neuter plural, meaning “lasting a year”

(seems I can paste into this box!)

  6. ex seaxe says:

    ἐτήσια
using the conversion box shown below
    meaning “lasting a year”

  7. Andreas says:

Might I take a stab at this? Is this not a depiction of an obelisk employing the principle of the gnomon; that is, the obelisk acting as a shadowstaff? I believe, Father Z., you described this function of an obelisk at some time in the not-too-distant past. More precisely, might this not be a depiction of the Obelisk of Augustus that one can find on the Via di Campo Marzio?

  8. Andreas: Exactly.

This is in a wall in the street by the building where, when digging around, they found the obelisk and some of the bronze tags for the sundial.
