    Filippo Balbi’s Fra Fercoldo nel chiostro della certosa di S. Maria degli Angeli – according to his Italian Wikipedia articel, while one of the photos of it in the Wikimedia Commons says, “Painting of a Carthusian monk, named Fercoldo (died in 1265), father of Pope Clemente IV”, giving date as 1855 and location as the Museo Nazionale Romano – Terme di Diocleziano.

    I’ve never before seen a trompe-l’oeil painting that used the inside of a door like this, though something similar is a feature of many an altarpiece…
