    The inscription:

    “SAPIENTIS AEGYPTI
    INSCULPTAS OBELISCO FIGURAS
    AB ELEPHANTO
    BELLUARUM FORTISSIMA
    GESTARI QUISQUIS HIC VIDES
    DOCUMENTUM INTELLIGE
    ROBUSTAE MENTIS ESSE
    SOLIDAM SAPIENTIAM SUSTINERE”

Imagine living in an age where you dig up an ancient Egyptian obelisk in Roman ruins, and decide “let’s get Bernini to carve a stone elephant and put it on top. We’ll put it near an ancient temple of Minerva and make it an allegory for wisdom.” What I would do to hang with that crew…

Sometimes I wish these photos included captions to tell us what we’re looking at. Until I read TheCavalierHatherty’s comment above, all I saw was a rather unusual statue. Period. I was able to tell there was an inscription, but I certainly couldn’t even really see it beyond that, much less read it. Thanks, Cavalier, for the explanation. ;D

Are you sure that isn’t black to move? Anyway, whoever goes first wins.

  4. Neal: DUH! Of course it’s BLACK to move. That’s how the board is oriented, too.

Thanks for the catch and my apologies.
