My View For Awhile: Along the way, cigars, relics and tearful memories

My time at the conference held by the St Paul Center for Biblical Theology (and Emmaus Press) was great.  Being close to Pittsburgh I wanted to see something of the city.  So, with the help of a great priest, Eastern Catholic, whom I met at the conference, I got around to see a few things.  Some highlights.  BTW.. most of the things I went to see were CLOSED.

From the bluffs above the city where there is a church dedicated to Mary with Tiffany windows.  It was, of course, closed.

Back in 1960 Bill Mazeroski hit a walkoff homerun to win the World Series.  The old Forbes field is gone, but there are traces.

Inside a nearby university building, homeplate.

German food was had with a priest friend.

Cigars were smoked and chess was played with a priest friend.

Driving in Pittsburgh.  It’s sorta like driving in Brooklyn except vertically.

I finally, after trying in vain for a couple days, visited the “relic chapel” of St. Anthony.  Literally thousands of relics.

Time to get out of Dodge and head eastward to my next stop near Harper’s Ferry and a place at a rectory.

On the way I stopped at the Flight 93 Memorial.

The older I get the more I am moved by sites like this.

Later in the evening, after tortuous driving up and over the Allegheny’s summit, Thai.

St. Peter’s in Harper’s Ferry.

Tomorrow, who knows?   I think I will try to get a big chunk of the southern drive out of the way.   Maybe back to Parris Island.  Yut.

Pray for me and for safety on the road.  Pray for those who have been so kind with hospitality and companionship in Pittsburgh and in the Charles Town / Harper’s Ferry area.

As a Byzantine Catholic (even though I’m mostly doing it Roman these days) I wonder, can you tell us your Eastern Catholic priest friend’s name?

Happy and safe travels, Fr. Z. Watch out for the people playing Mario Kart Live.
God be with you as you go.

Very neat pictures and cool commentary, Father. Thank you. Happy Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. I will be praying for your travels and kind friends at a pontifical mass this morning. Actually, you’ve been in my prayers for the novena. The food looks delicious. I wonder how much food from other places is pickled and/or preserved. Right now the garden is producing a lot and one doesn’t know what to do with it all. Maybe the Germans were on to something! Also Asian food has things that are pickled or fermented too. Yum.

If you *do* get to Parris Island, and you happen to be there for Mass at the Depot, and you see Rct George, please shake his hand and tell him his dad say “Hi!”.

Could that make him a 3rd class relic someday?? ;-)

Father is was nice to see that you apparently enjoyed your visit to my hometown. St Anthony’s is usually open every day except for Friday. It’s unfortunate that you were unable to visit St Mary Of The Mount. God Bless and safe travels.

Probably too late but if it’s relics your after, on your way home stop at the Maria Stein Shrine of the Holy Relics at Maria Stein, Ohio. Sadly don’t know how this will be run in the future, the Sisters of the Precious Blood have turned management over to a lay committee. So far so good but it is sad to see them unwilling to talk to other orders about a take over, insist that no religious order would ever be interested and haven’t even tried

Yes Father, you are in my prayers as you navigate the roads in my old stomping grounds. Your description of Pittsburgh driving is spot-on. What a shame that the Tiffany windows at that Pittsburgh church could not be seen; Boo. I am so pleased that you got to visit Charles Town, though. Thank you for soldiering on as a servant of God Most High.

There is something about that St. Peter’s photo that I find beautiful. Thanks for sharing updates on your travels. Praying for your continued safe travels.

    Cuban or Costa Rican cigars?

The flight 93 moves me as well. For the lives that were lost, but mostly because that day was the tipping point for our country….and now we are suffering the consequences. Consequences that will be felt for the next 100 years. And for the short term, the terrorists got exactly what they wanted.
