ROME 23/10 – Day 01-02: On the ground and in my digs

I did not see the sun rise or set on the 1st, which would have been the 1st day of my Roman Sojourn.  Thanks to Delta my arrival was delay by a day… a Sunday lost.   This morning the sun rose at 07:06 and it is setting now 18:53.  The Ave Maria bell ought to ring at 19:00.

The airport was not very busy at customs.  I basically walked through with no lines or waiting.   Luggage came quickly.  The taxi line was rather long.

A view of the church where I was ordained, and no woman will ever be ordained, a deacon.

On the ground and with my things at the apartment, I hit the street briefly for a few things, including fixin’s for caprese.

Can’t beat this mozzarella.  The tomato was spectacular.

I’m pretty beat, so I will keep this on the short side.  Hopefully tomorrow I shall spring forth bright-eyed for the Holy Mass to say in the early hours of a lovely Roman day.

Meanwhile, Black to move.

NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.

Glad you finally made it to Rome, one of my favorite places.

Solution to the chess problem: Black plays Bxp+!
White’s King cannot capture the Bishop or move to any other square, so White has to take the Bishop with its Knight on e4. Then Black administers the coup de grace: Qg3+.
White cannot block the check or take the Queen, so he has to move his King. If he plays Kh1, NxN is mate. If he instead plays Kf1, Black mates by taking the Knight on f2 with his Queen.

God Bless you Father! Looking forward to your sojourn and all of the pictures and experiences you’ll be sharing. Not to mention having eyes and ears on the ground during “walking togetherity”. It’s going to get spicy!

Rome is my happy place. Rarely have I been happier than when I am in Rome. I wish that I lived there. I wish you, Father, a happy sojourn in our Holy City.

I remember having lunch with the good Brothers and one of our very learned Priest. I brought up the “new” conversation on women deacons. Father was very flustered and told us the history of women deacons and how this has been discussed ad nauseam. It will never happen!

Delta ruined a trip to Ireland for us years ago – it took 2 days to get to Ireland from Los Angeles. The group came up with

If you ever wind up at the Chiesa Nuova and happen to see Cardinal Baronius, could you say a prayer before him for the O’Brien’s in Canada? I hope you have a lovely time in Rome!

    But wait, there’s more! Classic.

    Bxp+
    NxB
    Qg3+. ….

    If Kf1, then Qxf2#
    If Kh1, then Nxf2#
