Argentina’s new VP attends Latin Mass, sympathises with SSPX and opposes abortion
Following Argentina’s presidential election on Sunday 19 November, won by libertarian so-called “anti-Pope” economist Javier Milei, its new vice-president has taken flak in the media for her traditional Catholic views and practices.
Victoria Villarruel, 48, who was elected with the recent victory of her running-mate Milei, has been described as a member of “a marginal and ultra-conservative Catholic faction” and someone who engages in “secret rituals” (the ancient Latin liturgy) by the Argentine press. [Described so “by the press”. That settles that!]
She particularly drew criticism for her reported attendance of a Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) chapel in downtown Buenos Aires, with critics drawing particular attention to the fact that the SSPX was once home to (now-expelled) Bishop Richard Williamson who is an accused holocaust-denier. [Sounds like what “critics” would do… pull up something entirely irrelevant. Would they report that when Francis was still there he helped the SSPX get official status?]
Attention has been given to her position as honorary president of the Tridentine Foundation for Classical Values. [Catchy!] The group not only shares its name with the form of the liturgy she is known to attend, but also promotes “classical knowledge” such as the study of Greek and Latin alongside “strengthening in values and virtues” in education and the defences of the traditional family unit and life from the moment of conception.

We should pray for President-elect Javier Milei. Milei, like most Argentines, is Catholic, but rather fallen-away. He has a sordid side–he publicly claims to be a “former tantric sex coach”. On the other hand, he also seems to have some real openness to better things-choosing Victoria Villarruel as his running mate, his desire to reverse the recent loosening of abortion laws.
He also speaks openly of seeking spiritual advice from Rabbis, he went on a pilgrimage to the grave of the Chabad Rebbe in New York–but at the same time he says he can’t convert to Judaism. Hopefully Vice-President Villarruel will be a positive influence on him, helping him to realise that he doesn’t have to leave the Church to find the spiritual sustenance he has been seeking outside it.

The American secular media called Church Militanr “far-right”, so I’m not surprised seeing the term tossed around here. Its become little more than a disparaging slur for orthodox or classical conservative, depending on whether its from an ecclesiastic or secular source.
Correction: I should have said similar language aas “far-right”, not the term itself. My previous point stands nonetheless.

My Spanish is at a decoding level at best, and I do not know anything about the publications footnoted, but if Wikipedia’s “Political positions of Javier Milei” is accurate as to a lot of his “Social views”, Victoria Villarruel has her work cut out for her – and if her English Wikipedia article is accurate about her being “favorable to civil unions” of a certain sort, she has a way to go, herself: we should pray for both of them.
If/ when Trump converts, he would only attend the TLM. It’s the Modernists in the Church who have attacked him the most,
