Rome 24/10 – Day 17: Ups and downs… mainly downs

Welcome registrant:

Cariad

I’m down today.  The realtor  who was going to show me an apartment this morning called to say that there was already an offer on it.  She’ll look more. If the other thing falls through, I’ll be able to look at it.

I’m disappointed.  I am reminded of the 9th Beatitude, the one Matthew forget to include,

Beati qui non expectant, quia non disappointabuntur.

I’ve been looking at renting.  Buying has more possibilities.  Anyone have a €1.5 million to spare?

I’m down, but not out.

And I’m in Rome!

Thank you, Lord, for this day.

Angelico Press is wonderful. I note with interest that they have republished the classic by Abbot Anscar Vonier A Key To the Doctrine Of The Eucharist.

This book was very important in my formation during my conversion.

Please remember me when shopping online and use my affiliate links.  US HERE – UK HERE  WHY?  This helps to pay for health insurance (massively hiked for this new year of surprises), utilities, groceries, etc..  At no extra cost, you provide help for which I am grateful.

Eleanor Parker is a fine medievalist. She uses the moniker “Clerk of Oxford”. Today she posted this fascinating tidbit.

In churchy news… heh heh heh… via the … heh heh… Fishwrap (aka National Sodomitic Reporter)

I’ll bet it irked them to post that.

The Archbishop of Toulouse in France is countering the upcoming “Hellfest” with ghastly satanic crap planned for the city. HERE I don’t want to post the pictures. The Holy See could learn something from the Archbishop of Toulouse about idolatry.

The great Card. Zen has something to say about “walking together about walking togetherity”.

In chessy news…. new DRAMa! HERE

White to play! (How long did it take you?)

I was wondering why the news from St. Louis was a little thin this morning (Rome time – CET). Now more is coming.

The Saint Louis Chess Club has expelled GM Christopher Yoo from the 2024 U.S. Championship, saying in a statement after round five that the 17-year-old was guilty of “gross violations” of the event’s “Code of Conduct” and the “US Chess Safe Play Policy.”

After losing his fifth-round game to GM Fabiano Caruana, Yoo is alleged to have “crumpled his scoresheet, stormed out of the tournament hall and struck a videographer from behind,” according to the Saint Louis Chess Club, who say the police were called and responded.

Some of these players are pretty young and perhaps less than mature and well-socialized. I’m speaking in generalities. I don’t know Yoo (pace Matthew 25:12).

Fabi beat Yoo yesterday, coming from behind, as it were, to win with a forced mate. His third win in a row. He moved past Hikaru in the live standings to world #2. I’m also glad to see that Wesley is back in the top 10.

  2. Jim Dorchak says:

In the 34 years I have been selling real estate on two different continents, i have never seen a good buyer miss out on a property. There are good reasons and it is in Gods hands. I would venture you will have a better property fall into your hands as time goes by. Patience is hard when looking for real estate. Properties come on the market and are sold or removed. Fr. Z give it time, and I know you are likely on a schedule, but it will happen.
I will put your property search in our prayers at the FIRST MASS my family has been permitted to attend since Easter, this weekend.
Don’t be down. Look at it like a good adventure. Jim in Chile

  3. TheCavalierHatherly says:

From the great Canadian classic, “Anne of Green Gables”:

“Oh, Marilla, looking forward to things is half the pleasure of them,” exclaimed Anne. “You mayn’t get the things themselves; but nothing can prevent you from having the fun of looking forward to them. Mrs. Lynde says, ‘Blessed are they who expect nothing for they shall not be disappointed.’ But I think it would be worse to expect nothing than to be disappointed.”

    [Nice find!]

  4. William Tighe says:

Among his appendices to The Lord of the Rings Tolkien has one on “The Shire Calendar.” In that calendar the month “Winterfilth” ran from late September to late October; in Bree, that month was “Wintring,” and the Breefolk were wont to joke about “Winterfilth in the muddy Shire.” Now I know the background to Tolkien’s humorous subcreation!

  5. ajf1984 says:

From the linked article at La Croix International: “I believe we are witnessing the return of a form of puritanism,” quoth the Mind Behind the Lilith Machine in reference to the Archbishop of Toulouse consecrating the city to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Ha. I’d like to see any Puritan worth his salt associated with saints like St. Margaret Mary, or the Sacred Heart of Jesus devotion, or an archbishop…

The designer also quipped (clutching his pearls, no doubt), “I have no intention of expressing satanic viewpoints.” Uh-huh. That’s OK. Satan doesn’t mind if you aren’t explicitly doing it for his ‘glory.’ He’ll take it just the same. Reminds me of an axiom I’ve heard from a number of exorcists: just because you claim not to be interested in the devil when you dabble in the occult, that doesn’t mean the devil isn’t interested in you. St. Michael defend us. Our Blessed Mother, intercede for the Eldest Daughter of the Church.

  6. ex seaxe says:

“Obviously, the purpose of this conference was to overthrow the hierarchical class of the church & implement a democratic system.”

?THIS Pope? Can’t see it myself.

  7. ex seaxe says:

Apologies are due for not thinking more about my last comment. I should have first addressed the significance of this, from the Rule of St Benedict

Chapter 3: Summoning the Brothers for Counsel
1 As often as anything important is to be done in the monastery, the abbot shall call the whole community together and himself explain what the business is; 2 and after hearing the advice of the brothers, let him ponder it and follow what he judges the wiser course. 3 The reason why we have said all should be called for counsel is that the Lord often reveals what is better to the younger. 4 The brothers, for their part, are to express their opinions with all humility, and not presume to defend their own views obstinately. 5 The decision is rather the abbot’s to make, so that when he has determined what is more prudent, all may obey. 6 Nevertheless, just as it is proper for disciples to obey their master, so it is becoming for the master on his part to settle everything with foresight and fairness.

St Ignatius gave similar instruction to the Jesuits, and that is what, I think, Pope Francis is meaning when he speaks of synodality. NB no 4

    We always have bucatini…yum

  9. Greg the Geologist says:

“Obviously, the purpose of this conference was to overthrow the hierarchical class of the church & implement a democratic system.” I would slightly modify the Cardinal’s observation, to ” . . . implement a pseudo-democratic system”. Did we Mass-going Catholics have an opportunity to vote for our lay ‘representatives’ at the Synod? If not, how are we represented? By laypeople handpicked for their ideology / ecclesiology? Not sure how that would be democratic. It’s designed to give the appearance of representati0n, but in reality only serves to strengthen the hand of those behind the scenes who actually run the show (rather like the DNC).

  10. Sevens Dad says:

    Father

I went through a similar ordeal when my family and I made a cross-country move to our current home. We got routinely outbid on houses or couldn’t move fast enough on ones we could afford; all over the course of 2 years. We had a very tight budget with with to work with as well. Then, at the 11th hour, we found the home we currently live in, at a price we could afford and in a location that allows us to walk to Mass (and me to work).

Hang in there. I attribute our success to St. Joseph’s intercession. I’ve been told that Jesus has a “hard time” telling his parents ‘no’. So just in case you haven’t…

    Ite ad Joseph.

    We will pray for you!

  11. EAW says:

I think ajf1984 above is spot on. I’d like to add that those who (unwittingly or not) do the devil’s work by dabbling in the occult shouldn’t expect a thank you note.

  12. Gregg the Obscure says:

well, on October 28 (suitably enough the feast of Ss. Simon and Jude) the traveling relic of St. Jude will be at a parish across town. i intend to attend the Mass and veneration. i shall add the intention of resolution of your residence to my own urgent intention. there are some typos on the schedule for the relic tour, but for anyone interested here it is: https://apostleoftheimpossible.com/tour-schedule/

  13. monstrance says:

Did the “Listening Church” hear the American Catholics concerning Communion in the Hand ?

  14. ihslyceum says:

    Dear Fr. Z,

I am writing on behalf of my 2 teenage boys….Can you please send your favorite recipe to Spaghetti Alla Carbonara? We have eaten at da Marco’s near Celso e Giuliano, that is our favorite…if there is any chance you can get a similar recipe, that would be amazing.
