In churchy news… finally…

In the Diocese of Brooklyn the jackass pastor who let the pop-tart film a gross video in the parish church has now been relieved of his responsibilities because he has also, it is reported, done nutty things with parish funds.  HERE

  1. They are revving up for Tata Steel in Wijk aan Zee, 17 Jan – 2 Feb 2025. Some big names, Fabi, Arjun, Gukesh, Nodirbek, Wei Yi, Vidit, Pragg, Vincent, Anish… no Magnus and no Wesley (which diminishes my interest slightly). I see young (11) Faustino Oro in the Challengers section. I understand that it is fun to be there for this event. Any readers in Wijk aan Zee with a guest room?

World Championship is coming up. A few days before that Magnus and Fabiano will – in Singapore – have a Fischer Random match. They are calling this “Freestyle” Chess now. Okay. HERE I saw at Chessbase India a video of a photoshoot with Magnus and Fabi on top of some enormous building pretending to play chess. Singapore looks amazing. Anyone with a guest room in… okay, okay.

[NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.]

I am absolutely *thrilled* to know His Holiness will canonize Blessed Carlo Acutis and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati next year!!! I have had a devotion to Blessed PGF for some years and have had the pleasure of discovering the holiness of Blessed CA as well recently. What outstanding examples of cheerful holiness to children, teens, and young adults! As a member of a parish that is home to the Newman Center of the University of Akron (and which also has the blessing of FOCUS – Fellowship of Catholic University Students – in residence), I can tell you the students are also delighted.

God, in His Fatherly goodness, continues to send us holy men and women who are in our midst every day! Surely, those who encountered these two holy young Catholics did not realize they were in the company of saints at the time. Hopefully, when we encounter saints in the making, we feel their holiness and encourage them to continue to serve God worthily!

Thank you for this post, Father, and God bless and protect you and all here!

The crooked Brooklyn priest sounds familiar.
When the funds are getting misused , it’s usually accompanied by a general laxity.
A local priest was gambling with church funds – he would tell the parishioners that observing Holy Days was optional.

    Rg8#

It took a while to see that Rh1 wouldn’t work. Then I tried all other options before I tried Rg6

Thank you for the St. Edmund details! It is disappointing that Dr. Parker has not posted anything at her blog, A Clerk of Oxford, in nearly four years, but I see among her “Popular Posts” list there that her All Hallows’ Eve 2017 post, “The Saints and Shrines of England”, has some St. Edmund details – and in her active “My Blog List”, the blog ‘My Albion’ has an interesting-looking post today, “Edmund Martyr and the curious case of the black cross”.

It is good that Peter Grybauskas, in his recent edition of Tolkien’s The Battle of Maldon together with The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth (HarperCollins/William Morrow, 2023), notes some details of St. Edmund’s death when Tídwald, having helped recover for Christian burial the body of Beorhtnoth, beheaded by the Vikings at the battle of Maldon in AD 991, exclaims, “By Edmund’s head! though his own’s missing, / our lord is not light.” (A recording of Tolkien’s own dramatic reading of The Homecoming is now also for sale, and can be sampled at the publisher’s website and on YouTube.)

I’m still disappointed the Jacinta and Francisco were beatified under this pontificate (Fatima). Personally I don’t see the miracle associated with Carlos Acutis as being very convincing, but in a weird way to beatify these two handsome young men at the same time seems apropo for the men in the vatican.
Speaking frankly, no desire to be controversial, but I cannot grasp how we can witness what we witness day in and day out and continue to act as if everything is fine. It’s a recipe for madness. We’re all going to be mad hatters if something doesn’t break in our direction soon. Please Lord, send the relief!
