WDTPRS kudos go out to His Excellency Most Rev. Frank Dewayne, Bishop of Venice in Florida for a diocese-wide effort, called “The Light Is On” campaign, to get people to go to confession during Lent.
The diocese has bought time on TV for a commercial and is also advertising in other ways the fact that, during Lent, all parishes will have a confessor available at given times.

Also, throughout Lent the Diocese of Venice will run English and Spanish radio ads, as well as ads on bus shelters, billboards etc. The commercials and ads will point people to a special website set up precisely for this campaign.
This website includes a Guide to Confession, explanations as to why we go to Confession, as well as video interviews with local priests answering common questions about the Sacrament.

Archdiocese of Washington, and Diocese of Arlington have been doing this initiative for a few years now. It’s great being on public transportation and seeing an invitation to get to Confession. Welcome aboard, Venice!!
Boy, I wish our diocese would do that! As it is now, my parish offers Confession for 30 minutes at 6:30pm on Thursday’s. The other parish in town offers Confession on Saturday afternoons from 4:30-5pm. Small windows of opportunity!
Not surprised by this at all, and I’m not surprised the priest (or actor) pictured is wearing a cassock! May God bring blessings to this Diocese.
About a year after our new pastor came aboard here at St. Nemo’s in Eastpond Village not far from St. John’s Seminary. There was a small notice in the parish bulletin. It simply announced that confessions would no longer be heard on the Thursday before First Fridays and on the eve of Holy Days due to lack of interest. Confession will still be heard for 45 minutes on Saturday afternoons.
The neighboring parish has continuous adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Confessions are heard Saturday afternoons until the vigil Mass begins & again at 8:00 PM until all confessions are heard. There are at least two priests in the evenings and the lines are long.

” First, as a community of faith we must commit ourselves to prayer and fasting that wisdom and justice may prevail, and religious liberty may be restored. Without God, we can do nothing; with God , nothing is impossible.
Second, I would also recommend visiting http://www.usccb.org/conscience to learn more about this severe assault on religious liberty, and how to contact Congress in support of legislation that would reverse the Administration’s decision. “

Why Shrove Tuesday? Until today when I decided to google. Shrove is past tense of Shrive and to Shrive is to hear a confession, assign penance and grant absolution. So apparently Priests then are Shrivers ? I’m guessing traditionally today was a day to for pennance?
His Excellency has been truly a godsend to the Diocese of Venice in FL. I’m sorry that I’m no longer under his pastoral care, but I’ve moved under Archbishop Listecki’s jurisdiction, so I can’t really complain. May God continue to bless His Church in Florida!

There’s a similar initiative going on in Fairfield county, CT. As you drive along I-95, there are billboards saying that they’ll have Confession at every parish on….er, I think Thursday nights? Very cool. (I’m not in Fairfield county, so I don’t need to remember.)
