Just wanted to let everyone know that Fr. Leger at St. Catherine’s in New Haven, Ky will be offering his first Traditional Latin Mass this Sunday, June 29, 2008 at 1PM EST. I hope everyone will consider joining him and show their support. This will be a High Mass with a choir. This Mass will be offered every Sunday. Please share this information with anyone who may be interested.

That’s nice, to see the TLM appear in a tiny rural parish. It so happens this is a five-minute drive from the lovely abbey of Gethsemani, as well.

Comment by William — 26 June 2008 @ 1:42 pmThis is a good influence for the “holy land” of KY where so many of the great original Mother Houses of some orders’ first presence in the U.S. have lost their numbers to modern ways. Very appropriate for such an area. Also in area is former OP Eastern Province novitiate. It would be good if the Merton devotees would also stop in! Not too far away I believe, also are the publishers for NCRegister.
Comment by CK — 26 June 2008 @ 3:01 pmCouldn’t get an email to go through, so – On Sunday, June 29, the TLM will be celebrated at Mission San Juan Bautista near Hollister, California, a San Andreas Fault area. The Mission was founded by Father Lasuen in 1797. Father Nicholas Milich has moved back to his hometown of Watsonville to be near aging parents. He was in the state of Washington. We are sure that the Holy Ghost was working on this one. Father’s superiors said that they couldn’t spare him for lack of enough priests available. Suddenly there were many priests available to take his place. On June 25 he held a three hour practice, somehow importing several altar boys,all well-trained. There will be a full choir as well, from I know not where, to give the parishioners a High Mass beginning. He will have weekly Sunday Mass at the Mission. A dear friend and her husband informed me yesterday afternoon. Annette and Don have been actively promoting the TLM for a long time, with the usual discouraging results. Their diocese is Fresno. Don has been serving a Novus Ordo Mass for the Mission pastor and will be cross bearer on Sunday. There has been much opposition to the TLM in the Diocese. Our FSSP priests from Sacramento have been offering Mass at an area parish two Sundays a month and offered more, but were rebuffed. It is a six hour round trip, by the way, from Sacramento. They do the same for the Chico area, another grueling trip. Annette felt it necessary to remark that Father Milich arrived wearing his cassock in contrast to the civvies the have been accustomed to. We never see St. Stephen’s priests sans cassocks, everywhere they go, including the annual BBQ dunk tank or running across a field at the boys’ summer camp. I greatly digress. Nonetheless, I rejoiced for 3 hours on the phone with Annette yesterday, who was near ecstasy! If you go to http://www.oldmissionsjb.org/history.html you will find an interesting and beautiful site for the largest Mission in California. Gloria, Grass Valley, CA (It only takes me an hour and 15 minutes to get to St. Stephen’s in Sacramento).

Comment by Robert — 26 June 2008 @ 7:02 pmNew Haven is just a stone’s throw from where the SSPX chapel used to be (Boston) before they purchased the building for St. Benedict’s in Louisville. It’s also quite close to New Hope, where ‘Inside the Vatican’ is published. It’s in the Eastern Time Zone.

New Haven is also quite close to the Abbey of Gethsemani. How wonderful if the Latin worked its way back to the Trappists! They still chant the hours, but in English. The monastery’s new (circa 1968, I think) church is quite modernist, designed by a old time wreckovation specialist from Cincinnati. However, a new church was necessary. The old, neo gothic church, which was built when the monastery was founded in 1848, had structural problems. My uncle was a lay brother at Gethsemani. He passed away last year. I miss him. We would have indepth discussions about the importance of EF and the unfortunate consequences of VCII.
Bardstown, KY was the first diocese west of the Alleghenies. St. Joseph Proto Cathedral is quite beautiful and has several important paintings, I think gifts from the King of France to Bishop Flaget.
