Archd. of Los Angeles: new TLM

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULA — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 9:13 am

    From a reader:

Writing to thank you for your work on your blog and to advise you of a Mass in which your readers might have interest:

    Ss. Peter and Paul Church
    515 West Opp St
    Wilmington CA 90744
    http://sppc.us

existing EF Low Mass: Weekly, 6:30am
new EF High Mass: every 3rd Sunday, 9:30am (in place of the very well celebrated NO)

Our parish is run by the Norbertines of St. Michael’s Abbey in Silverado, CA.
    St. Michael’s huh… gosh… there’s a surprise!   o{]:¬)

    1. I hope your “there’s a surprise” is supposed to be a joke, as the Norbertines
of St. Michael’s have no less than a dozen EF Masses each day at their abbey
and are the celebrants of almost every EF Mass from LA to San Diego
      (I said “almost”).

    2. Anon,

Yes, Fr Z made a joke. He has referred to St Michael’s before – in a very good way.

    3. Is this the first TLM in LA since 1970?? I was under the impression that Cardinal Mahoney would never “allow” it.

      Comment by Kirk Rich — 20 October 2008 @ 6:01 pm
    4. Kirk:

No, there are a few, but are far between. Aside from SS Peter and Paul church, there are only two others in the archdiocese that are every sunday. They can be found on the archdiocese website: http://www.la-archdiocese.org/directories/parishes/indult.html

    5. If in the LA, OC, area, you can try also the Eastern rite churches, quite a few, if you like a more “rooted,” sometimes less experimental, liturgy. It works for me.

    6. Kirk:

True, there aren’t many EF Masses in the Archdiocese of LA, but there are more than a few in the Diocese of Orange. Depending on where you live, one of those might work for you. There is at least one at the JPII Catholic Center in Yorba Linda, one at Mission San Juan Capistrano and one at St. John the Baptist in Costa Mesa. Happy hunting!

    7. To kirk and miguel,

There are actually a lot more TLMs then on that list. That list reflected the old indult situation, and is not even accurate there. If you go to unavocela.com you will see several places with weekly TLMs. Thomas Aquinas College has it daily. There are several other locations that have it that are not listed there either (I know of one parish that does it, but won´t advertise it, since they have already had fights with a certain auxiliary bishop over having an altar rail and traditional stuff in the NO).

And +Mahony allowed the TLM early on after Ecclesia Dei adflicta in fairness to him.

    8. This past Sunday, I worshipped at their EF Low Mass. The church is very beautiful and truly a house of God. Plus, the sermon was solid pro-life.

May God bless the Norbertines abundantly. They are awesome.

      Comment by Andraea — 21 October 2008 @ 11:55 am
    9. Andrea: I might add that the sermon at the NO celebrated at Ss. Peter and Paul is also solidly pro-life. A few weeks ago, we had three weeks of sermons on Humanae Vitae! How about that

      Comment by Adam — 21 October 2008 @ 10:10 pm
    10. Do they celebrate the Roman-rite or the Norbertine?

      Comment by Tiny — 22 October 2008 @ 8:35 pm
    11. Tina: The TLM. I have been told that the abbot has decided that Summorum Pontificum refers specifically to the 1962 Missal. They still celebrate it privately though.

They are indeed awesome. Wonderfully orthodox, devoted preachers as well as confessors.

They also take mass intentions and run a boys prep school, and teach at Mater Dei High.

Kindly spike his stats. My anti-spam word fits: caritas.
