Chicago: 12 Dec. at High Noon: Mass in front of Pres.-Elect Obama’s HQ

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULA — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 1:54 pm

    From Mark Shea’s place.

On Friday, December 12, the Pro-Life Action League will be co-sponsoring a solemn Mass at noon at Federal Plaza in downtown Chicago in honor of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

This Mass, the first ever in Federal Plaza, is a significant exercise of our religious freedom, right on federal property – directly in front of the building where Barack Obama has his transition team office!

The Mass will be offered by Chicago Auxiliary Bishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller – who, I might add, is an amazingly gifted preacher.

    7. Great! One would hope they’d forgo offering communion in the hand for such a public and unfortunately likely controversial event.

    8. Bishop Garcia-Siller was in “in residence” at my parish for a short while while he was the major superior for the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit.

I did enjoy his homilies very much but I am hesitant to say that he is an amazingly gifted preacher. Maybe the gifts of the fullness of the priesthood has enhanced his preaching.

What really struck me then was his devotion to the BVM. To offer Holy Mass and preach on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe should be quite powerful. I hope someone puts the Mass on-line or perhaps EWTN will re-broadcast the Mass over the weekend.

    9. It would have been great if this public Mass had been done before the elections. No?
I was dismayed at the lack of visibility of our prelates as we watched the elections unfold. A lot more should have been done (without disturbing that precious ‘tax exempt’ status) in the name of unborn children. Instead, it was left to a few stalwarths who work heroically for ‘life’ to stem the tide of evil.

    10. Wondering if the Guardian Angels of all those dead babies, killed in abortions, will be present at the Altar, interceding for us?

      Comment by supertradmom — 5 December 2008 @ 10:43 am
    11. It might set the stage for what, perhaps, ought to be regularly offered Masses around the country for the expresed, well advertised purpose of calling attention to the crime of abortion. Such Masses line of sight to the White House, U S Capital, and every known abortion clinic on a weekly basis will make it “uncomfortable” for Catholic members of the House and Senate to vote in favor of FOCA. The best defense is a good offense. Time to take the traditional Church out front in a substantive way. The liberal Church has taken it out there on social justice issues with minimal impact. I’d bet thousands of public “Latin Masses” across the country every week in prominent political places would have a miraculous effect.
