Oakland, CA – 20 Sept: Bp. Cordileone, Pontifical TLM

From a reader:

Next Sunday, September 20th, 2009, the Bishop of Oakland, California, His Excellency Salvatore Cordileone will celebrate a Solemn Pontifical Mass at Saint Margaret Mary to mark the 20th anniversary of the Traditional Latin Mass at the parish.  For the longest time, I believe it was the only parish in all of the East Bay and quite possibly the  entire San Francisco Bay Area, where the EF could be found.   The priest who first obtained the indult from then Bishop John Cummins, Fr. Vladimir Kozina, will be honored with the blessing and dedication of the parish hall in his name.  Of note, a second EF is now being celebrated in the diocese by one of the diocesan priests.  Hopefully my terminology for the Mass is correct, please correct any of my errors.

You mean they’re *not* going to do it at their new cathedral? :)~

This mass is a “must attend” for any serious Catholic. Just after Bishop Cordileone was ordained an auxillary Bishop here in San Diego, I was privileged to attend a Solemn Pontifical High Mass which he celebrated at Mary Star of the Sea, in La Jolla. It, without doubt, was the most beautiful mass I have ever attended.

San Diego’s loss is Oakland’s gain, don’t miss this opportunity to immerse youself in this magnificent mass.

    Deo gratias

How far we have come in two years because of Summorum Pontificum! Just a few years ago, this Mass could only be celebrated by indult and by a Priest held suspect by his brother Priests. Now, the Bishop of the diocese will be celebrating it, and the Priest who was faithful to preserving it will be honored! Deo gratias!

To be extremely accurate it is a Pontifical Solemn Mass from the Throne. Pontifical Masses have three degrees

Pontifical Low Mass- If following the rubrics ideally there are four servers assisting the bishop, and two candles on either side

Pontifical Solemn Mass at the Faldstool- This is more like a regular Solemn Mass, with deacon and subdeacon, and only a few differences

Pontifical Mass from the Throne- Let’s see…the bishop, deacon, subdeacon, an assistant priest in cope, two deacons of the throne, a second subdeacon to be Crucifer, two MCs, two acolytes, etc- Fortescue counts 23 ministers altogether.

This is the most solemn form of Mass next to a Papal Mass. It should be more than awesome

His Excellency Bishop Cordileone will be assisted by the priests and oblates of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. Sunday TLM has been celebrated weekly since 1989, but with the arrival of the Institute in 2005, then Bishop Allen Vigneron (now Archbishop of Detroit) gave approval for the TLM to be celebrated daily.

Just today I got a peek of what the “Pontifical Throne” (or at least part of it!) would look like and posted a picture on my blog: http://sanctamargaritamaria.blogspot.com/ :)

I seem to recall high praise from WDTPRS when Bp. Cordileone became a bishop… and it was certainly well deserved!

This is excellent, I attended a Pontifical Mass in NYC several months ago and it was indeed a fantastic and inspiting event. I would encourage spreading the news so attendance is overwhelming. People need to know this Mass is available and more importantly, now a part of the regular life of the Church. God Bless this Bishop and out Holy Father..We have all read that Calif. is in deep need.
