    Can I ask a stupid question?

    Why is a Cardinal wearing the vestments of a Deacon? Isn’t it confusing for the average layman to see? Would it not be like a 4 Star General wearing the garb of a Lieutenant? Is it because he’s a Cardinal Deacon in the College of Cardinals, or is this something any Bishop can do at Mass because he has received the fullness of Holy Orders (Diaconate, Priesthood, Episcopacy)?

    Rich, it is the later. Fr. Z had an interesting post some time ago about a Cardinal serving Mass for him.

    This is completely unrelated to Cardinal Burke, but at the church we went to today, they had us kiss a bare cross. I know it’s the ‘Veneration of the Cross’, but I’ve never been to a service where the cross didn’t have a corpus on it. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

    An inspiring and venerable Prince of the Church! Many more years for His Eminence!

    One thing that was irritating me during the broadcast were the commentators! Other than the fact that they (to me at least) were trying to “fill in” too much and quite a few mistakes were also said that showed their lack of knowledge on what they were commenting upon.

    I told the Missus that I didn’t know if they were Deacon Deacons or Cardinal Deacons assisting with the Liturgy, apparently they were the latter.

    teechrlady, the parish I attended did this as well. It’s not my normal parish and I have a feeling its not a licit practice. This parish actually removed the corpus from a crucifix.

    As for the commentators, I wish, at least, that they would use the new translation. After all, when telling us what the Latin prayer is saying, should they not tell us what the prayer really says?

    Father Z, perhaps you could enlighten us about the choir cassocks… It used to be the tradition/custom for Monsignors, Bishops and Cardinals to wear their black cassocks on Good Friday. My Bishop still does this – in his case a Jesuit habit. I have also seen other Bishops and Cardinals wear the house cassock. Has this gone by the wayside, Father? I was surprised to see all that red!
