“dust off the censer, and toss out the bong” – 07/07/07

Here is a grooovy oldie post from the WDTPRS archives. This, from this very day in 2007:

The Official WDTPRS Parody Song Writer, the esteemed Tim Ferguson has been at it again.

As he put it,

“I ruminated a bit more … and came to the realization that, while “La Donna e Mobile” might be readily appreciated and understood by those with an interest in the motu proprio, there’s also a need to reach out to those who might not be so appreciative and who, in general, tend to have different musical tastes.”

He continues….

So, reaching back to the halcyon days of folk music and came up with a version of the Pete Seeger classic (made famous by the Byrds in 1965) :

Go to the altar (turn, turn, turn)
look to the East now, (turn, turn, turn)
there’s a time for every Mass now, if it’s valid.
The time for banjos and dancing is gone,
dust off the censer, and toss out the bong.
No need for hugging, we all get along
let’s keep our focus together, on Jesus.

Page through the Missal (turn, turn, turn)
remember the rubrics (turn, turn, turn)
there’s a time and a purpose for those words there
Pure, humble rev’rence is what we now lack,
just do the red words and say those in black.
When we say High Mass, there’s no need for crack,
just let your deacon and subdeacon guide you.

Now weed your library, (turn, turn, turn)
use some discernment (turn, turn, turn)
it is time now to brush up on your Latin.
Farewell to Vosko, McBrien, Hans Kueng,
deep down you knew that they just peddled dueng,
the 60′s are old and the Church is still young
what still subsists is a thing of great beauty.

  1. Siculum says:

    Hahaha, just quietly sang along.

    Happy Anniversary MPSP!

    Back to work.

  2. What scares me, Father, is that I think I follow how you got from the Sign of Peace to Pete Seeger…..

And now whenever our most holy, most faithful pastor pivots to the assembled faithful and says “Dominus Vobiscum” I will have to peek out from behind my Liber and softly intone “turn, turn turn……” -and-

    if I had altar bells
    I’d ring them at epiclesis
    I’d ring them at elevation
    All over this land….

  3. michelekc says:

This song just won the Catholic Interwebs.

  4. Peg Demetris says:

I do know how to love Him, what to do, not to move Him
I’ve been changed, yes really changed
In these past few years when I see myself, I am somebody else

I do know how to take this, don’t believe 70′s musicals
    He’s a man, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s just a man
And I’ve had so many men before fill my head with bull, he’s just one more

I should knock him down, I should scream and shout
I will speak of Love, let the truth come out
I always knew it would come to this, this is turnabout

I don’t think it’s remotely funny that we should be in this position
We’r the ones who’s always been so calm, so cool, no heretics fool
This is not a “show”, They scare me? NO

I should knock them down, I should scream and shout
I will speak of Love, let the Truth come out
I always knew it would come to this, this is turnabout

Yet, if they say they love loved me, I’d just laugh, I’d say prove it
It’s just the dope, them smoking dope
I’d turn my head, I’d back away, I’d shake the dust from my shoes
They just don’t know, We hear Him so, We know Him so.

  5. Ipsitilla says:

Great parodies…I wrote this one seven years ago in honor of Summorum Pontificum, to the tune of “Be Not Afraid”:

You shall not receive the Chalice
But you shall not die of thirst
You shall move beyond the Sixties
Though you do not know the way
You shall hear words in the Latin tongue
    And you shall understand
You shall see the backs of priests and live

    Chorus:
Be not afraid, the ancient rite won’t hurt you
Come now, look and see, the Mass is still the Mass!

If you hear some organ music in the church
    You shall not cry
If you don a little chapel veil
    You shall not be harmed
If you step out of your “comfort zone”
    Where people don’t hold hands
Know that God is with you through it all

    Blessed is the chant
For it shall have “pride of place”
Blest are you who prayed for this
For now you may give thanks
If “progressives” throw a fit because we’re going back in time…
Know we must be doing something right!

  6. Reconverted Idiot says:

“Farewell to Vosko, McBrien, Hans Kueng,
deep down you knew that they just peddled dueng,”

I lolled hard at that one.
