Happy 500th Birthday St. Philip Neri

I saw that my friend Greg DiPippo at NLM posted that today is the 500th Birthday of one of my great patrons, St. Philip Neri.  I was ordained on his feast in 1991.

I have a 1st class relic of this great saint for my altar.

Perhaps you would be good enough to say a prayer for those new communities of the Oratory who have sprung up.  They seem to be on the right track.

UPDATE:

Someone sent me a photo of a cake made for Pippo!

I was in Toronto for the better part of 2013 and was greatly blessed by the Oratory Fathers there. They were holy men. They run two parishes, a school, and a philosophy (undergrad) seminary. Daily both the EF and the OF are offered. Daily confessions are heard. Here in Vancouver I know of a priest, who likewise regularly offers both the EF and OF (and the one OF mass that I went to at his parish was mostly in Latin, other than the readings, completely chanted, and Ad Orientem), who has expressed interest in establishing an Oratory here one day.

“At first she though him comic, but once she had heard him speak about the things of God, she felt herself so fired with longing to worship God that under his direction she came to such a state of life that she dedicated herself totally to the love of Christ, and to works of charity…”

The Little Brothers of the Oratory in Washington salute and thank you — and invite you and all to the Washington Oratory-in-Formation’s commemorative Vespers service on Wednesday evening at St. Thomas Apostle Church in Woodley Park.

A blessed year. This year also marks the 500th birthday of St. Teresa of Avila.

  5. Bea says:

Prayers for the Oratory, Father, and prayers for you.

Prayers and financial support would be greatly appreciated for the Oratory fathers who are encountering great struggles to set up an apostolate in St. Louis.

St Wilfrid’s church in York, UK, which is situated next to the glorious York Minster has recently become the York Oratory-in-Formation. We have an EF Missa cantata every Sunday at noon and Latin Vespers & Benediction at 6pm. I am very privileged to be the Oratory’s first Director of Music.

  9. RichR says:

Not to pry, Fr., but how on earth did you get a 1st class relic of St. Phillip Neri? I’ve heard it’s near-impossible for someone to get a relic if they’re below the rank of Bishop. That is so cool!

  10. Minister Itinerans says:

Yesterday at the St. Louis Oratory-in-formation we had Solemn Vespers in the St. Louis Cathedral Basilica, followed by an outdoor procession to the Oratory with a 1st class relic of St. Philip Neri. This is a very good community forming in St. Louis!

  11. Supertradmum says:

RichR, my son has a first class relic of St. Augustine of Hippo with the papers, and a second class relic of part of the bandages from St. Padre Pio. It happens.

Alas – I confused “feast day” with “birthday.” The Dumbest Ox is no idle title….
