“One will see cardinals opposing cardinals”. An example and a request.

RodriguezAt Akita, Japan, Our Lady is purported to have said:

“The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres (other priests); churches and altars will be sacked; the Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord.

Today we have an example of a cardinal against a cardinal.   While we grant that cardinals have always been against cardinals, today’s conflicts are particularly disturbing.  The stakes are very high, the points of dispute are serious, and the role of social media amplifies the confusion.

CRUX and other outlets report that Oscar Card. Rodriguez Maradiaga bitterly attacked Raymond Card. Burke and indulged even in name-calling.

[…]

He was among four cardinals who submitted a set of questions, called dubia, to Francis, seeking to dispel what they described as “grave disorientation and great confusion” created by the document.

In the new interview, Maradiaga comes out swinging.

“That cardinal who sustains this,” Maradiaga said, referring to the criticism of Amoris, “is a disappointed man, in that he wanted power and lost it. He thought he was the maximum authority in the United States.

“He’s not the magisterium,” Maradiaga said, referring to the authority to issue official teaching. “The Holy Father is the magisterium, and he’s the one who teaches the whole Church. This other [person] speaks only his own thoughts, which don’t merit further comment.

“They are the words,” Maradiaga said, “of a poor man.”

Maradiaga also criticized conservative schools of thought in Catholicism, of which Burke is often seen as a symbol.

“These currents of the Catholic right are persons who seek power and not the truth, and the truth is one,” he said. “If they claim to find some ‘heresy’ in the words of Francis, they’re making a big mistake, because they’re thinking only like men and not as the Lord wants.

“What sense does it have to publish writings against the pope, which don’t damage him but ordinary people? What does a right-wing closed on certain points accomplish? Nothing!

“Ordinary people are with the pope, this is completely clear,” Maradiaga said. “I see that everywhere.

“Those who are proud, arrogant, who believe they have a superior intellect … poor people! Pride is also a form of poverty,” he said.

“The greatest problem, however, is the disorientation that’s created among people when they read affirmations of bishops and cardinals against the Holy Father,” he said.

Maradiaga called his fellow cardinals to loyalty.

“I think that one of the qualities we cardinals [should have] is loyalty,” he said. “Even if we don’t all think the same way, we still have to be loyal to Peter.”

Whoever doesn’t offer that loyalty, he said, “is just seeking attention.”

[…]

In the past, Card. Rodriguez Maradiaga also publicly attacked Card. Müller, Prefect of the CDF.

Clearly Card. Rodriguez has not taken the time to get to know Card. Burke personally.  I have.  The judgement of Card. Burke which Card. Rodriguez has somewhat rashly asserted is, quite simply, the opposite of the truth.  I don’t doubt, however, that he sincerely believes what he said about his brother in the College.

I know that many of you say the Rosary each day.  I suggest that you say a decade of your Rosary for Card. Rodriguez Maradiaga.

The moderation queue is ON.

This is worrisome indeed. As we are given more and more unclear teachings from the magisterium, we are condemned to misinterpretation from cardinals and bishops. There needs to be an infusion of the Holy Spirit into the RCC now more than ever. Come Holy Spirit, Come.

  2. NBW says:

Cardinal Maradiaga…who are you to judge??

  3. RichR says:

I have never met Cardinal Burke, but every time I’ve read articles by him or seen him in interviews I see a man who is humble before the Lord and eager for the salvation of souls – including his own. He realizes that truth sets people free, and he is concerned that clouding up doctrine will lead Christians astray. Burke’s example to the world is the very antithesis of “ambition”.

  4. Maltese says:

Our Lady of Akita also said: “As I told you, if men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the deluge, such as one will never have seen before. Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity, the good as well as the bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful. The survivors will find themselves so desolate that they will envy the dead. The only arms which will remain for you will be the Rosary and the Sign left by my Son. Each day, recite the prayers of the Rosary. With the Rosary, pray for the Pope, the bishops and the priests.”

Pope Benedict XVI said this message is essentially the same as the Third Secret of Fatima.

  5. Maltese says:

My Priest-friend, who I recently went to confession to just before he died, had said not to pay attention to such dire predictions. Maybe he is right. But I think Akita, like Fatima, is a valid apparition site.

  6. I will pray as I ALWAYS do for our Cardinal Burke who is going through the darkest time of his priesthood and is staying joyful and embracing it like a man desiring Sainthood.
Cardinal Maradiaga however needs a torrent of prayers as he is and has for years chosen the other side instead of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
When his name first surfaced in the media I read everything I could find about him. I say it again… Maradiaga needs boatloads of prayers as his path, like mine is a tough one to Heaven.
St Thèrése and her sister once prayed for the deliverance of a sinner. The man at the last moment embraced Christ.
Cardinal Maradiaga, St Thèrése is coming for you !
    S. Teresiae, Ora pro nobis.

  7. Nan says:

Eh, someone recently told me that Cardinal Burke hates the Holy Father. [ABSURD!] I tried to explain that the Holy Father is creating confusion, and was given a bunch of balderdash about how pastoral it is to allow those who don’t follow church teaching a free pass to receive communion despite their continuing irregular situation. That’s a big FU to those who follow Church teaching.

  8. JustaSinner says:

    So speaks the Third-World Cardinal…

[What, my I ask, are you implying? Card. Sarah is a “Third-World Cardinal”. What’s your point?]

As an aside, it is my opinion that Cardinal Burke is one of the holiest of cardinals. He is ridiculed, ostracized, removed from his positions but he continues on and does so with a dignity and humility that is not often seen.

  10. philosophicallyfrank says:

In looking around the internet; there seems to be some question as to whether, then, Cardinal Ratzenger did approve of it. According to ewtn.com:
[EWTN: Despite claims that Cardinal Ratzinger gave definitive approval to Akita in 1988, no ecclesiastical decree appears to exist, as certainly would in such a case. However, some individuals, such as former Ambassador of the Phillipines to the Holy See, Mr. Howard Dee, have stated that they were given private assurances by Cardinal Ratzinger of the authenticity of Akita. In any case, in keeping with the current norms, given the absence of a repudiation of Bp. Ito’s decision by his successors, or by higher authority, the events of Akita continue to have ecclesiastical approval.]

Has there been any official verification of the apparition? If it is true; then we need to make everyone aware of the prophecy.

  11. Marine Mom says:

1 We must bear our Cross, then, with its first dimension, which is its breadth; that is to say, with whatever circumstances may attend it.
2 Again, we must bear our Cross with its second dimension, which is its length; its duration, so long as it shall please the All-good God that we should bear it.
3 Further, we must bear our Cross with its third dimension, which is its height; that is to say, the multitude of sufferings of which it is composed, and which follow one upon another: in this resembling the flood of waters-and Scripture compares them thereto-which we behold gradually increasing, rising and swelling, till at length they overflow.
4 Finally, we must bear our Cross with its fourth dimension, which is its depth; that is to say, the greatness of the torment which it inflicts, penetrating to the inmost parts, and piercing to the very quick. In all these states we ought never to turn away our eyes from our Divine Master, who, at every moment and at once all that He was to suffer successively, in different portions and in different places; who experienced in a marvelous manner all the torments of the martyrs, the persecutions of the faithful, the trials of the Church, the horror of sin, and specially the sins of those to whom His precious death would become useless by their own fault, through their want of correspondence with His love; …. The Holy Ways of The Cross, Henri-Marie Boudon

  12. JonathanTX says:

This Cardinal is a bit of an enigma to me, since he also said very non-progressive statements like “no man is born homosexual” and “if God had wanted for it to be possible for women to be priests, then the Mother of God, Mary, the most holy of all women, would have been ordained by Him as the first one.”

  13. Suburbanbanshee says:

Calling someone a “poor man” is an insult now?

Paging Il Poverello, St. Francis… you know, the patron of the Pope you work for?

[That’s not the kind of “poor” he meant. “Pathetic” gives the impact of what he meant.]

  14. MrTipsNZ says:

When the end came for Our Lord, only one Apostle remained at the foot of The Cross. There is no reason why we should not expect it to be any different for the clear and current attempt to crucify His Bride.

Card Maradiaga might do well to learn from Card Sarah and speak as plainly against mara salvatrucha and 18th street as he has here.

  15. iamlucky13 says:

“Clearly Card. Rodriguez has not taken the time to get to know Card. Burke personally.”

Or perhaps even more simply, read Cardinal Burke’s actual statements to see what he has really said about Pope Francis, and how he has posed his concerns. Anybody who thinks Cardinal Burke challenges the magisterial authority of Pope Francis either misunderstood him, or failed to even listen.

The general tone is, once again, critical of open discussion, portraying it as a failure of loyalty.

  16. Aquinas Gal says:

    Will pray for him.
Most of what he says is an ad hominen fallacy: “Those who are proud, arrogant, who believe they have a superior intellect … poor people!”

As for this: “The Holy Father is the magisterium, and he’s the one who teaches the whole Church.”–whatever happened to collegiality? I don’t recall liberals ever saying that about Pope Benedict or John Paul….

  17. HighMass says:

Have never been fond of this Cardinal, heard he was Papabile in 2005???

How true what Our Lady is to has purported to have said in Akita Japan is unfolding before our eyes…..but we also know in the end Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart is going to Triumph, hopefully soon!

  18. frmgcmma says:

If my memory serves me well … Card. Maradiaga was visiting the US in 2004 when Burke was Archbishop of St. Louis and John Kerry was running for President. Burke told Kerry he wouldn’t be given holy Communion in the archdiocese when he visited there. Card. M. was sometime later a guest in the archdiocese of St. Louis and gave an interview stating his disagreement with Burke. So this is not a new or sudden dislike of Card. Maradiaga.

  19. q7swallows says:

Wow. The dogmatism implicit in Card. Maradiaga’s assessment and condemnation of his fellow cardinal’s motives sounds awfully magisterial all by itself. Weren’t we supposed to leave the judgment of individuals to God? Perhaps Card. Maradiaga could find room in his heart to cease scourging poor Card. Burke and pray for him instead — if he is so sure of his deficiency. Ordinary people might appreciate such a good example.

  20. majuscule says:

Praying for priests really works. Say a rosary for all priests. And pray specifically for some!

In this case many, many people really really need to pray specifically for Cardinal Maradiaga.

  21. Atra Dicenda, Rubra Agenda says:

They certainly exist on the right as well, but this is a clear example of a petty left wing idealogue.

  22. Emilio says:

Actually the resentful man is from Honduras, and actually said in an interview at the 2005 conclave that he would be an ideal candidate and was “ready to serve if called [to be Pope]”… and if that weren’t enough humility out of the man for you, he was critical of the previous Pope, but for not taking into account his talents during his reign. The archbishop of Tegucigalpa can rarely be found there nowadays, as he now has the Pope’s ear and is too busy as head of the ever-mysterious “c9.” He isn’t fit to undo Cardinal Burke’s shoelaces.

  23. HighMass says:

we pray next conclave Card. Sarah comes wearing a White Cassock

  24. Benedict Joseph says:

The Magisterium is a two sided coin – the living and the perennial. The living Magisterium composed of the episcopate, with the Bishop of Rome at its head is charged with the preservation, exposition and depth reflection upon the perennial Magisterium.
Surely the Church is not the possession of any one of us. The Roman Catholic Church is not the toy of anyone. We belong to the Church. It encompasses us. It comprehends us in our Baptismal identity. This is made manifest in a teaching of the First Vatican Council: “The Holy Spirit was not given to the Roman Pontiffs so that they might disclose new doctrine, but so that they might guard and set forth the Deposit of Faith handed down from the Apostles.” [Dogmatic Constitution “Pastor Aeternus” of Vatican I (1869-70)].
Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga, Cardinal Archbishop of Tegucigalpa in the first Latin American country to have the demographic transition into a protestant majority, rife with persistent crime and poverty. It is apparent that in his service to the global Church he manifests the same pastoral genius and heroic virtue he demonstrates in Honduras.

  25. benedetta says:

This prince of the Church really appears to hate Vatican II…and not in a good way…

  26. philosophicallyfrank says:

I may be wrong; but, I think that everyone is “missing the boat” on this. While it is, indeed, regrettable that Cardinal Maradiaga attacked Cardinal Burke; it is only symptomatic of the real situation that we need to concentrate on and that is the dire warning that the Blessed Mother gave us in the apparition and whether that apparition was ever approved/accepted by the Church. Cardinal Maradiaga’s attack on Cardinal Burke, the “Kasperites” attacks on Church teaching regarding Communion for the divorced & remarried, the continuing abuses on the Mass and, perhaps, Pope Francis’ wanting to “re-examine” Pope Paul VI’s “Humanae Vitae” could well be connected to the warning that there would be turmoil in the Church. Someone who has the know how or the connections needs to find out whether the apparition was approved/accepted or not by the Church. If it was then the words of the Blessed Mother needs to be spread throughout the world. Her words will not be as convincing without the Church’s approval, sadly.

  27. CanukFrank says:

Interesting that on Fr. Jim Martin’s Facebook page (again? I know, I know ?) kudos are being poured out over the Card. Maradiaga. I can only guess who added the quotes from the Crux article…?

  28. Rod Halvorsen says:

God is sifting His Church, fellows.

    God is sifting His Church.

“Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven”…

    Wait now…and watch!

That’s all I can say at this point.

  29. Cornelius says:

Interesting, though, that one never heard Cardinal Burke respond in kind to these insults and attacks. So, who’s the better man, and who really is “poor”?
