Here is some good news… well… it’s also bad news. I guess it depends on your perspective.
One Quarter of Ordinations in France Belong to the Tridentine Rite
In 2017 all French dioceses ordained only 84 priests. [That’s bad news… but it’s good news, if we consider the liberals that could have been ordained.] Nearly half of the active diocesan priests in France are over 75 years old. [Ditto.] In 2015 there were 5410 active priests over and 6217 priests under 75 years old.
A quarter of all French priests ordained in 2017 belong to communities of the Old Rite. [That’s a big deal.] Le Figaro comments that the “traditionalist movement is no longer marginal”. [That’s a fact.]
The net is good news. Right? The Traditional Rite is on the rise, the priestly demographics are shifting. As the demographic changes the influence of more traditionally inclined priests will increase, drawing forth more faithful men who will have good models.

Nothing extraordinarily grand, but I got a really nice compliment from someone today. Basically, someone who’s more advanced in a hobby of mine than I am told me I was really good at it. Here I’d thought I wasn’t very good at all, so getting that compliment made me feel like a million bucks.
Our parish had one of the newly (this year) ordained priests in our diocese appointed as an assistant last week. Also a young priest from our diocese (2 years I believe) who grew up in our parish I saw having brunch out the other morning in a cassock :) He was also a great confessor!
Mosul has been freed from ISIS, and displaced families are starting to return to the city.
On June 29th we welcomed our fourth child, Samwise Barnaby (nicknamed Sam), two weeks ahead of his due date. The delivery could have been fraught with complication but went off without a hitch. His three older siblings and his father and I are all quite starry-eyed over him. We chose the name Samwise in hopes that he will be as steadfast and loyal as the hobbit of the same name, and Barnaby in honor of St. Barnabas, “son of encouragement” in the early Church.
Vacation at last!
I had the honour of serving Pontifical Vespers and Pontifical High Mass at the Throne offered by His Eminence, Cardinal Burke.

His Eminence Francis Cardinal Arinze will be celebrating a Pontifical Solemn High Mass at Sacred Heart Parish in South Euclid Ohio on Sunday, July 23rd, at 5:00pm. Sacred music will be performed by the Lyceum Schola Cantorum. All are invited.

My family and I attended a beautiful, very Catholic wedding recently. It was all so lovely: the mass, the music, the bride, the young priest’s sermon, and how all of the siblings from both families were in the wedding somehow or another. The most touching part for me was seeing the young almost groom praying so earnestly before the mass began. It was also encouraging to see how God worked in these young people’s life. Also, it was inspiring, in a world where marriage is so attacked, to see this beautiful sacrament treated so reverently!
My youngest son is now a postulant with the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius. If all goes well and he discerns that this is indeed his vocation, he will receive the habit and enter the novitiate on August 15th. We will be traveling to Chicago for this, also an excuse to visit one of my favorite cities.
Saturday Missa Cantata at a parish that Father said likely hadn’t seen such a Mass since 1970. Met a couple of priests and seminarians. Father plans to have First Saturday Latin Mass but due to budget constraints it will be low Mass most of the time.
Yesterday, I left work to go to my car, only to find it had been broken into and the battery stolen. There was another victim about 15 min ahead if me. By the time I realized the battery was gone, I saw a police officer drive up to the other car, so only had to wait until he had taken the guy’s statement to make mine. Someone took me to buy a new battery and a guy at the auto parts store offered to come put it in. It took him 20 seconds.
I still have insurance and repairs to deal with.
Hillary lost the election. Good news don’t get much better than that.
Back in the 1950’s, archeologists on Iona found fragments of wood from St. Columbia’s writing hut. They were dismissed by skeptics as bits of a later structure. Carbon dating now shows that it dates back to the original monastery and probably is from his hut.
In a typical archeologist hoarding move, the original dig head was keeping the fragments in matchboxes in his garage, even after he left the university. Of course, archeologists hear about plenty of artifact destruction, so it makes them paranoid. But having a matchbox reliquary in a garage shrine is a new one on me!

With regard to the subsequent post, “The Seminary” (aussi dit «USML») is hosting an annual conference sponsored by Courage later this month. The day prior to the conference proper, there will be a free day-long seminar for clergy for which registration is open until the 15th.
A friend of mine is being recieved into the Church tomorrow. After years of blockages that I don’t understand at all, Matt will come into the church that he loves with his whole heart and soul at 1pm EDTJuly 14th, 2017. I will be blessed to see it.
