Bloody Memorial

In honor of the impending release of Mehmet Ali Agca, here is an image to contemplate.

In the Piazza of St. Peter there is a single porphyry cobble stone among the many thousands of black basalt. It marks the spot where the Pope bled when Agca shot him.

One wonders if, now released, Mr. Mehmet will be making a trip to Rome – or if
he would be allowed to. Sadly, while I’m all for forgiveness,
I think this particular murderer’s brain is quite addled and being locked up
for the rest of his life is not only just, but an act of kindness.
I don’t suspect he will fare well on the outside.
