14 May: Pope speaks Latin at Regina Caeli

Today during the traditional Sunday Regina Caeli audience in St. Peter’s Square, the Holy Father spoke in Latin to a group of young people, Latinists, in attendance.  I will get the text for you later.  Today is a busy day.

I am eagerly awaiting, especially since I can’t get a connection to the Vatican “Bollettino” for some unexplained reason.

I am particularly curious what if anything the Holy Father might have said about the “usage” of Latin. As we know these days here and there someone might be inclined to study Latin but you won’t find anyone willing to actually use it. For that, Latin is not a worthy instrument, not even among the scholars. The language that was used to clarify and define catholic teaching over the centuries is now only good if it is sifted and re-shaped into some vernacular idiom. Isn’t it sad?
