IRELAND: TLM in Fermoy, Co. Cork – 28 June

Here is an interesting event for those of you in Ireland.

St. Colman’s Society for Catholic Liturgy

St. Colman’s Society for Catholic Liturgy is pleased to announce that Holy Mass will be celebrated in the Extraordinary Form on Saturday, 28 June 2008 at St. Patrick’s Pro- Cathedral Church, Fermoy, Co. Cork, at 11 am.

The Mass is that of Vigilia Sanctorum Apostolorum Petri et Pauli as prescribed in Missale Romanum of 1962, approved by the Blessed John XXIII.

This Holy Mass is specifically offered for the intentions and well-being of Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI.  Members of the Society are encouraged to participate and to pray for the Holy Father’s intentions.  All are welcome to attend.

The Society for Catholic Liturgy wishes to express its profound gratitude to His Lordship, Bishop John Magee, Bishop of Cloyne and titular Parish Priest of Fermoy, for his kindness in facilitating the celebration of this Holy Mass in the Extraordinary Form.

The Society would also wish to thank the Very Reverend Fr. Aquin Casey for making St. Patrick’s Church available for the Mass; to Deirdre Foley, chorimistress; to the members of the choir who will be present, and to Mrs. Howard, the organist.

    I know what a co-cathedral is, but what is a pro-cathedral?

  2. Jef says:

a pro-cathedral is a church which temporarily serves as the cathedral of a diocese(Pro tempore or pro tem according to wikipedia). the the episcopal seat of the Archbishop of Dublin is still a pro-cathedral.

  3. Jef says:

    P.S
There will be a TLM in Achonry Cathedral on the 21st of June. not the bishop unfortunately but still good

  4. M. says:

I’m so very glad to hear this. Things finally seem to be thawing in Ireland. This is only the beginning, with God’s help.

  5. Franzjosf says:

Jef: Thanks. So the Archbishop of Dublin has a pro-Cathedral because the Anglicans have the actual Cathedral? How absolutely politically incorrect. Wonderful.

Anyway, glad to hear the TLM news for Ireland!

  6. Franzjosf, the Anglicans have two cathedrals in Dublin, the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, commonly called Christ Church, which serves as the cathedral of the Anglican Archdiocese of Dublin and Glendalough – they’ve retained the ancient name – and St Patrick’s, just down the hill from it, which is The National Cathedral and Collegiate Church of Saint Patrick in Dublin. Both of these were originally Catholic. Christ Church was inside the city walls way back in Norman times while St Patrick’s was outside, as far as I can recall from what I learned in school in Dublin.

There are no plans, as far as I know, to build a Catholic cathedral, though I think there were at one stage. The ‘Pro’, as Dubliners call it, is right in the centre of the city. The two Anglican cathedrals are also near the city centre, but south of the River Liffey while the ‘Pro’, happily, is on the north side!

  7. The proper name for the ‘Pro’ in Dublin is ‘St Mary’s Pro-cathedral. It’s bells sound the Angelus every day at noon and at 6pm on RTE One, the main national TV station, and on RTE Radio One, the main national radio station. Every so often the usual ‘offendees’ ask for this practice to be stopped, since RTE is largely funded by mandatory TV licences.

  8. Franzjosf says:

Fr. Coyle: Thank you for the information, and I’m glad to hear that the Angeles remains on the radio! I happened to meet the organist of St. Patrick’s Cathedral several years ago at a music festival in Edington, Wilts; he’s a wonderful musician and has an excellent choir. I hope that St. Mary’s has good music. One day I’ll visit. Best to you.

  9. Rumold says:

On Sunday 29th June the feast of SS Peter and Paul the Archbishop of Dublin will preside at Solemn High Mass in the extraordinary form in St Kevin’s Church Harrington Street Dublin. He will administer Confirmation in the old rite. This is the first time since the 1960s that this will be done.Mass begins at 10.15am.

  10. Santiago says:

The previous Archbishop of Dublin Desmond Cardinal O’ Connell was asked in a media 5 or 6 years ago if he would consider building a new cathedral to replace the Pro-Cathedral. His response was something along the lines of ” you would want to be crazy to think about building a cathedral now as the liturgical world was in such a state of flux, what would be “acceptable” today would not be in 10 years time”. I ‘d like to thing he was being optimistic and pictures better things to come – an age where Ireland will come to it’s senses and recapture a sense of sacredness and beauty.

Good to see that the Bishop of Cloyne has facilitated another Mass in the EF in his diocese (I know – he doesn’t need to give his permission at all following SP – but we have to deal with reality here).

Readers might not be aware that there is to be a second monthly EF Mass in St. Peter’s and Paul’s Church in Cork City. The EF of the Mass will now be celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of each month at 12 noon as well as the existing Mass on the 1st Saturday of each month at 10 am.
It still means that there are just 2 regular, public EF Masses in Cork (the second largest city in the country) per month. But it’s an improvement. Well done to all involved.

  11. Sandra says:

Bishop Magee could not have been more helpful in facilitating this Mass for the Holy Father’s intentions. Furthermore, Fr. Casey, his Administrator in Fermoy, was extremely helpful in making the churhc available and could not have been more cooperative.

  12. Patrick says:

They say there are three cathedrals in Dublin: two amateur, and a pro!
